'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is gearing up for its release and lead actress Zendaya is already warning fans about the heartbreak that is in store. The actress, who plays MJ in the superhero franchise opposite beau Tom Holland's Peter Parker, has opened up about the character's 'painful' separation following the events of 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'.
With the new film picking up after Peter asks Doctor Strange for a spell to make the world forget that he is Spider-Man, the consequences are severe. Besides the general public forgetting him, even his close friends like MJ and Ned Leeds have no memory of their time together as best friends.
According to new details revealed by Empire, MJ has moved on and is involved with a new romantic interest, played by Ahsoka actor Eman Esfandi, while Peter is forced to watch from the sidelines. Reflecting on the storyline, Zendaya admitted that even she found the situation emotionally difficult. "As someone who cares about the characters and cares about these films, it's like, 'Oh my God, it's so heartbreaking.' You just feel so bad because you want them to be happy, and you know ultimately they would be happier together," she added.
With romance pushed aside due to the memory loss, Zendaya explained that it helped forge an entirely new dynamic between the two characters. "It's easy in a way, because I don't have to play that I know this person. I don't have to play all the history that they have together because seemingly, to her, they don't."
Although MJ no longer remembers Peter Parker, she still knows Spider-Man. The trailer teased a scene at Ned's house party, where he and MJ introduce Peter Parker to their Spidey board and indicate that they were trying to identify Spider-Man and find his location.
'Brand New Day', directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Jon Bernthal, Kevin Feige, and Amy Pascal, is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 29. The film promises to deliver an emotional rollercoaster as fans witness the consequences of Peter's drastic decision.
