Masti 4 Faces Disappointing Box Office Opening
The much-anticipated comedy sequel Masti 4 hit theaters on Friday, October 21, alongside Farhan Akhtar's war drama 120 Bahadur. Unfortunately for both films, the weekend proved to be challenging as they failed to attract significant audiences to cinemas.
Disappointing Numbers for Adult Comedy Franchise
Starring Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh, and Aftab Shivdasani, Masti 4 managed only ₹2.75 crore on its opening day. The film showed no growth on Saturday, maintaining the same collection figure. On Sunday, day three of its release, the movie saw a slight improvement, earning approximately ₹3 crore.
According to industry tracking platform Sacnilk, the total collection for Masti 4 stands at ₹8.50 crore after the first weekend. This performance is particularly concerning for an adult comedy franchise, as this genre typically relies heavily on strong opening-day momentum since weekend growth is usually limited.
120 Bahadur Shows Some Improvement
While both films had a dull opening, Farhan Akhtar's 120 Bahadur demonstrated better resilience over the weekend. The war drama opened at ₹2.25 crore on Friday but saw reasonable growth on Saturday, collecting ₹3.85 crore. Sunday brought further improvement with approximately ₹4 crore in earnings.
The total collection for 120 Bahadur now stands at ₹10.10 crore for the first three days. Despite this growth, industry analysts at Box Office India noted that the film needed a much bigger push to recover from its weak opening.
Previous Installment Outperforms Current Release
In a surprising turn of events, last week's release De De Pyaar De 2 is actually dominating over both new releases. The performance of Masti 4 is particularly concerning when compared to the previous installment in the franchise.
Great Grand Masti (2016) collected ₹8.50 crore nett over its opening weekend, matching what Masti 4 has managed to achieve in the same timeframe. At the current pace, Masti 4's numbers will likely fall short of its predecessor's overall performance.
Industry Analysis Points to Casting Issues
Box Office India provided insight into 120 Bahadur's underperformance, noting that war dramas demand larger-than-life personalities who can carry the weight of such projects. The absence of such performers in the current cast has diminished the film's chances of success, according to industry experts.
The clash of two major releases on the same weekend appears to have divided the limited audience available, resulting in neither film achieving the breakthrough numbers needed for a successful theatrical run.
