Mumbai, Maharashtra – The Hindi film industry is witnessing a significant resurgence at the box office, fueled by the strong performances of recent releases such as 'Dhurandhar' and 'Border 2'. Renowned film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh has emphasized the critical role of strong content in this turnaround. In an interview with ANI, Adarsh highlighted that today's audiences are savvy and judge films based on their merits rather than being swayed by promotional tactics or fake public relations efforts.
"Through social media, some attempt to craft a perception using trailers, songs, teasers, or dialogue promos, but viewers are well-informed. Nothing remains hidden from the audience. On the opening day, it becomes immediately clear if the created perception was misleading," Adarsh stated.
Shifting Public Opinion and the Impact of Quality Work
Adarsh also addressed the phenomenon of social media trolling, citing actor Varun Dhawan as an example. He noted that public opinion often changes once audiences experience the final product.
"Recently, Varun Dhawan faced extensive trolling on Instagram and other platforms, with many negative comments. However, from Friday, when viewers exited theaters after watching the film, those same critics fell silent. Why? Because when your work speaks for itself, the noise diminishes," he explained.
Boosting Industry Morale with Back-to-Back Hits
The success of 'Border 2' and 'Dhurandhar' has injected a wave of optimism into the film industry. Adarsh reflected on how these achievements have restored confidence.
"A sense of joy has swept through the industry. Confidence stems from success. 'Dhurandhar' released on December 5, and now, just before Republic Day, 'Border 2' has also commenced strongly. When two major films release and both open well, with positive reports and visible business hype, the industry's faith is renewed," Adarsh elaborated.
He added, "Despite the flops in 2025, I always say that no matter how dark the night, dawn must arrive. We endured a low phase with consecutive unsuccessful films, but the upcoming releases in 2026 hold promise."
Accountability and the Foundation of Strong Storytelling
Adarsh cautioned actors and producers against blaming audiences for box office failures, urging them to take responsibility instead.
"Many actors still make excuses when their films flop, attributing it to external factors rather than admitting weaknesses in the film or writing. Acknowledging fault requires immense courage," he said.
He stressed that writing and robust storytelling form the bedrock of any successful film, irrespective of star power.
"Focus on writing—it's the foundation. Big stars might draw crowds initially, but if the content is lacking, audiences won't stay. Infuse soul into the writing, and viewers will embrace it with love," Adarsh noted.
Summarizing his perspective, Adarsh asserted, "Fake PR or artificially crafted perceptions cannot propel a film forward. Ultimately, your work will speak, and that is what truly matters."
'Border 2' Sets a Benchmark with Impressive Opening
'Border 2', starring Sunny Deol in the lead role, premiered across India on Friday, January 23, and early figures indicate a soaring start on its first day. The film has reportedly collected ₹32.10 crore net in India, positioning it as the biggest opener of 2026 so far and matching the box office collection of last year's 'Chhaava' (₹33.10 crore).
According to Adarsh, the war drama has recorded one of the most substantial openings in recent times. It performed strongly in mass belts and single screens, with urban centers showing improved turnout as the day progressed. Although heavy rain in parts of North India affected business, positive word of mouth is anticipated to boost numbers over the weekend and the Republic Day holiday.
