Major Bollywood Box Office Clash Looms as Dhurandhar and Toxic Set for March 19 Release
Two of the most anticipated films of the year, Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Toxic: A Fairytale for Adults, are heading for a significant box office confrontation on March 19. While trade analysts are actively discussing their potential earnings, veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has expressed concerns that this inevitable clash could negatively impact both productions.
Sanjay Gupta Draws from Past Experience to Warn of Business Dilution
In an exclusive interview with Variety India, Gupta reflected on how such simultaneous releases often reduce overall business rather than enhance it. Drawing from his personal experience with the 2017 clash between Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil and Shah Rukh Khan's Raees, he emphasized that both films would have benefited more from solo releases.
"Our people don't have money flowing that they can just go and watch two films back-to-back. There are many people who can't watch two films in one month. It's unnecessary, but again, the makers probably have their reasons," Gupta stated, highlighting the financial constraints of the average moviegoer.
Audience Forced to Choose Between Two Big Releases
While Gupta himself plans to watch both films, he believes the broader audience will face a difficult choice. "Both films will do well, but neither will accomplish their individual capacity. So, it's unfortunate," he added, predicting that while successful, neither movie will reach its full potential due to the split audience.
Gupta Praises Dhurandhar and Hints at Future Storylines
The filmmaker also shared enthusiastic praise for Aditya Dhar's directorial venture, Dhurandhar. "I have a vague idea of where the story is going to go and all of that. We're going to have Hamza's backstory, why he became who he is, and all of that. See, Dhurandhar is a phenomenon," he revealed, offering insights into Ranveer Singh's character development and upcoming narrative arcs.
Toxic Gains Attention with Star-Studded Cast
On the other side of the clash, the Yash-starrer Toxic has already generated substantial buzz with its impressive ensemble cast, featuring Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, and Tara Sutaria. The film's unique premise and high-profile actors have positioned it as a major contender in the upcoming release battle.
Countdown Begins as Industry Awaits Box Office Outcome
With both big-budget films targeting the same release date, the countdown to March 19 has officially begun. The entertainment industry is now watching closely to see whether this clash will create spectacular box office fireworks or simply divide the audience, resulting in diminished returns for both productions. The outcome will serve as a crucial case study for future release strategies in Bollywood.
