Yuvraj Singh on Father Yograj: 'He Stopped Being My Father'

Yuvraj Singh Reflects on Childhood Acting and Father-Son Dynamics with Yograj Singh

Former Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh recently delved into a poignant chapter of his past, shedding light on his early foray into acting and the evolving relationship with his father, Yograj Singh. In a candid conversation, Yuvraj shared insights that reveal the complexities of their bond, shaped by both chance encounters and deliberate choices.

A Serendipitous Debut in Punjabi Cinema

Yuvraj Singh recounted his unexpected appearance in a Punjabi film as a child, a moment that emerged from a desire to spend time with his father. "The film I did happened at a time when I wasn't doing well at school," he explained. "My dad was like, 'Just come with me on the shoot. Stick to cricket, but also do this.' So I went along with him, and the role I played was the childhood version of my dad." This experience, though brief, offered a glimpse into Yograj's passion for acting, which Yuvraj observed with curiosity rather than ambition.

Navigating Fame and Parental Influence

When asked if watching his father perform helped him handle later success, Yuvraj emphasized the innocence of childhood. "When I look back at that moment now, it was really just about what your parents tell you to do at the age of eight or nine," he said. "You tag along because you want to spend time with them. For me, it was about being with my dad and watching what he did, because he loved acting." Despite this exposure, Yuvraj clarified that acting was never his aspiration, nor was cricket initially—his early interests included roller skating, tennis, and indoor games.

The Transformation from Father to Coach

A significant turning point in their relationship occurred when Yograj began coaching Yuvraj in cricket. "When I was a kid, he was a father. When he started coaching me, he was never a father after that, he was a coach," Yuvraj revealed, describing it as "probably the saddest part." He reflected on the challenges of parenting, noting, "What parents learn, they pass on to their children. We have to learn from that and be better for our kids. He did what he knew at that time, but it's a very thin line as a parent."

Yograj Singh's Harsh Methods and Family Conflict

In earlier discussions, Yograj Singh admitted to employing strict tactics to steer Yuvraj toward cricket. He recalled an incident where Yuvraj won medals in skating, only for Yograj to throw them out of the car, along with his skates, prompting tears. "Shut up," Yograj roared, acknowledging his "very bad temper." The situation escalated at home, with Yograj's mother intervening forcefully, even suggesting he leave the house. Defiantly, Yograj declared, "Either I will live in this house, or he will. I want him to play cricket, and I will not let go until he plays. You can do whatever you want to. This is how champions are made."

Lessons from a Complicated Legacy

Yuvraj's reflections highlight the bittersweet nature of their journey—from a child seeking his father's company on a film set to a cricketer molded by rigorous coaching. While Yograj's methods were driven by a desire for vindication against past slights in cricket, Yuvraj's eventual embrace of the sport led to a storied career. This narrative underscores the delicate balance between parental guidance and personal freedom, offering a universal lesson in nurturing talent without sacrificing emotional bonds.
