Comedian and actor Vir Das is preparing for a significant career milestone as he steps into the director's chair for the first time with Aamir Khan Productions' upcoming comedy film, 'Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos'. In a recent candid conversation, Das shared surprising insights about working with one of Indian cinema's biggest stars, Aamir Khan, revealing a side that defies typical Bollywood superstar stereotypes.
The Podcast Revelation: A Star Who Defies Expectations
Appearing on a podcast hosted by Hook on YouTube, Vir Das detailed the team's initial apprehensions and meticulous planning for Aamir Khan's shoot schedule. The crew decided to film Khan's portions last to ensure everything was perfectly in place. "We're going to shoot with Aamir last because we really want to have our shit together and have a tight-functioning unit," Das explained. He admitted the team braced for the usual star treatment, expecting a large entourage and multiple vanity vans.
What transpired, however, was a lesson in humility. Aamir Khan arrived half an hour early for his shoot and used only half of a standard double-door vanity van. His small entourage was managed efficiently by the star himself. This simple act, as Das noted, immediately shifted the atmosphere on set and dismantled preconceived notions about what a star of his caliber requires.
The 'Fanboy' Moment and On-Screen Magic
The reality of directing Aamir Khan truly struck Vir Das when the cameras started rolling. After Khan's first take, Das took an unexpected pause. "I took a 30-second pause because I didn't believe that I was directing the superstar," he confessed. He described the internal struggle of maintaining a director's composure while fighting the instinct to react as an admirer.
Through the director's viewfinder, Das witnessed what sets icons apart. "You also realise, in that moment, that some people just have this magical, ethereal thing that they bring on to the screen, which you can see in real time," he said. He humorously contrasted this with the rest of the cast, including himself, quipping that they lacked that specific cinematic magic.
Das also praised Khan's collaborative and secure nature as an actor. The team engaged in a high level of improvisation with him, and Khan was exceptionally open to their creative suggestions, fostering a productive and innovative environment.
