"The tipping point from giving up this unbelievable material life that he had... the adoration he had and the success... was when a number of deaths happened in the family within two years," Kavita explained. "So, when his mother passed, he just went to Osho and took sanyas."
Early Spiritual Inclinations and a Fateful Bookstore Encounter
Kavita traced the roots of Vinod's spiritual yearning back to his childhood, painting a picture of a man destined for a quest beyond material fame. She revealed a remarkable anecdote from his teenage years that hinted at a cosmic connection to his future guru. "Vinod was very spiritual from when he was a child. When he was 17, he bought the book 'Autobiography of a Yogi' and at that time, he said that he didn't realise then that Osho was in the same bookstore at the same time," Kavita recalled, suggesting an unseen thread was already weaving his path toward Osho's teachings.
Life Inside the Commune: From Superstar to Simple Seva
After renouncing his stardom, Vinod Khanna fully immersed himself in the life of Osho's commune, first in India and later at the famous, and ultimately infamous, ranch in Oregon, USA. Far from the adoring crowds and film sets, he embraced a life of humble service. "He was Osho's gardener. Osho's home was private, and very few people had access to it, but if you were the gardener, you were there. That was his seva," Kavita shared, highlighting the stark contrast between his former and new lives.
His role extended beyond tending to plants. Due to a shared physical stature, Vinod also served as a living mannequin for the guru's iconic wardrobe. "In Oregon, Osho had these fabulous flowing robes, which were designed for him, and all of them used to be tried on Vinod because of their same shoulder size," she revealed, offering a unique glimpse into the daily realities of ashram life.

Kavita emphasized that Vinod's exploration of spirituality was intense and began long before his official departure to the ashram. "Even when he was in Mumbai before he moved to Pune ashram, the meditations on Chowpatty Beach in Bombay, which is right at the centre of this throbbing city, and everyone took their clothes off, and they were meditating naked in a circle on the beach."

"I know Vinod was not there looking for the physical part of it, I think his journey was a spiritual one with immense commitment and devotion," she stated, defending the sincerity of his quest against potential misinterpretations.
