Varun Dhawan's Hollywood Dream: A Spielberg Launch That Never Was

Varun Dhawan, one of Bollywood's most popular stars, made his glittering debut in 2010 with Karan Johar's blockbuster film Student of the Year, alongside Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra. However, in a surprising revelation, the actor has disclosed that his original career plan was far more ambitious and international in scope.

The Hollywood Ambition Revealed

During a candid conversation on the Be A Man, Yaar! podcast, Varun Dhawan shared fascinating details about his early aspirations. The actor confessed that he had always dreamed of making his acting debut not in Bollywood, but in Hollywood, under the direction of legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

"In fact, my plan was to debut in Hollywood to show my father," Varun revealed. "I wanted that either Steven Spielberg or Anurag Kashyap should launch me. Papa ko jhatka sirf in dono cheez se lag sakta hai (my father would have been shocked only by these two things)."

Family Dynamics and Career Path

The actor also shared insightful details about his family's influence on his career choices. Varun recalled that his mother had warned him early on that his father, renowned director David Dhawan, would not launch him simply because of their familial relationship.

"My mother told me that your father is never going to launch you because he has never launched anyone and he will only work with you when he feels you have become a star," Varun remembered.

This family dynamic apparently fueled his desire to make an unconventional entry into the film industry. Despite his Hollywood aspirations, Varun acknowledged that his father was genuinely surprised when Karan Johar offered him the launchpad in Student of the Year.

Preparation and Training

Before his eventual Bollywood debut, Varun Dhawan took his craft seriously, enrolling in multiple acting classes to hone his skills. This professional preparation demonstrated his commitment to the art of acting, regardless of which film industry he would eventually enter.

Current Projects and Box Office Success

On the professional front, Varun Dhawan continues to enjoy significant success in the film industry. His most recent appearance was in the film Border 2, which achieved remarkable commercial success, earning over Rs 400 crore at the global box office following its theatrical release on January 23, 2026.

The actor's upcoming project is the film titled Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, featuring Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde as female leads. Originally scheduled for release on June 5, 2026, the film's premiere was strategically rescheduled to avoid a box office clash with Yash's Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown Ups. The new release date is now set for June 12, 2026.

Varun Dhawan's journey from aspiring Hollywood actor under Steven Spielberg's direction to becoming one of Bollywood's most bankable stars represents a fascinating alternative path that never materialized, yet ultimately led to tremendous success in his home industry.
