Sunny Deol's Box Office Streak Interrupted by 'Gabru' Release Postponement
Sunny Deol has been enjoying an extraordinary resurgence in his career following the monumental success of 'Gadar 2' in 2023. The Anil Sharma-directed blockbuster, featuring Ameesha Patel, shattered numerous box office records upon its August 11 release, revitalizing Deol's standing in the industry.
This remarkable momentum continued with 'Jaat' in 2025, an action drama that maintained steady performance in theaters throughout its run. The actor then launched 2026 with 'Border 2', a powerful war drama sequel that crossed the impressive Rs. 300 crore milestone, further solidifying his mass appeal and box office drawing power.
'Gabru' Faces Second Major Release Delay
While 2026 was anticipated to become the "year of Sunny Deol" with multiple back-to-back releases, the emotional drama 'Gabru' has encountered significant scheduling obstacles. The film, originally scheduled for release on May 8, 2026, has been officially pulled from the calendar, representing its second major postponement this year.
According to reports from Bollywood Hungama, "Gabru has been postponed and won't arrive in cinemas on May 8. The makers plan to lock the new release date in a few days, after which they'll make an official announcement." This development follows an earlier rescheduling from March 13 to May 8, creating uncertainty around the film's eventual theatrical debut.
Strategic Reasons Behind Multiple Delays
The initial postponement from March 13 was strategically implemented to avoid competition during the holy month of Ramzan and to steer clear of 'Dhurandhar The Revenge', an action-packed entertainer that premiered on March 19. This calculated move aimed to optimize box office performance and prevent a direct clash with another high-profile production.
The production team, led by director Shashank Udapurkar and producer Vishal Rana, is expected to announce a revised release date shortly, keeping audiences eagerly anticipating the film's eventual arrival in theaters.
Salman Khan's Extended Cameo in 'Gabru'
One of the most significant highlights of 'Gabru' remains Salman Khan's special appearance in the film. According to industry sources, the superstar has filmed an extended cameo consisting of three distinct scenes that contribute substantially to the narrative.
A source familiar with the production shared, "There was a requirement of a star and the makers knew that Salman Khan fit the bill completely. Salman was approached and he loved the part and its contribution to the film. He quietly shot the film more than a year ago and it has shaped up well. His cameo in Gabru is all heart. It is adorable and also highly entertaining."
Competition Fills the Vacated Release Slot
With 'Gabru' vacating the May 8 release window, two other films have stepped in to claim the date. 'Aakhri Sawal', featuring an ensemble cast including Sanjay Dutt, Neetu Chandra, Namashi Chakraborty, Amit Sadh, Sameera Reddy, and Tridha Choudhury, will premiere alongside 'Dadi Ki Shaadi', a light-hearted family entertainer starring Kapil Sharma, Neetu Kapoor, and Sadia Khateeb.
Sunny Deol's Packed 2026 Schedule
Despite the 'Gabru' delay, Sunny Deol maintains a busy schedule for the remainder of 2026. His period drama 'Lahore 1947', produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, is anticipated to arrive in theaters during August. Additionally, Deol will portray Lord Hanuman in the highly anticipated mythological epic 'Ramayana', scheduled for a grand Diwali release that promises to be one of the year's most spectacular cinematic events.
The actor's continued presence in multiple high-profile projects demonstrates his enduring relevance in Bollywood, even as individual films navigate the complex scheduling challenges of the modern film industry.
