Mumbai, Jan 13 (PTI) - Actor Suniel Shetty holds filmmaker J P Dutta's war epic "Border" as a career-defining moment. He openly admits a lingering wish to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, "Border 2." The only barrier? His character met a heroic end in the original 1997 movie.
A Nostalgic Launch Event
The 64-year-old actor attended a special event on Monday evening. He helped launch the song "Jaate Hue Lamhon," a fresh remake from the original war drama's album. This new track features prominently in "Border 2," which is scheduled for a theatrical release on January 23.
The Legacy of 'Border' and Captain Bhairon Singh
"Border" drew inspiration from real events during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Shetty portrayed Captain Bhairon Singh, a seasoned Indian Army officer. The character's ultimate sacrifice towards the film's conclusion left a lasting impact.
"I will never forget this film," Shetty told reporters with evident emotion. "When I first received the offer for this character, I felt genuine fear. Playing a fictional role on screen is one thing, but embodying a real-life hero presented a formidable challenge."
He shared a poignant reflection on his character's fate. "When I filmed my death sequence, I experienced a profound sense of happiness. There is a unique honor in dying for your country on screen. Yet, for the very first time, I felt a twinge of regret. If Captain Bhairon Singh had survived in 'Border,' I would have undoubtedly been a part of 'Border 2.' I have always carried that deep-seated desire to wear the uniform again."
A New Chapter with 'Border 2'
"Border 2" is directed by Anurag Singh. The film marks the return of Sunny Deol to the franchise. It also introduces a new ensemble cast, including popular actors Varun Dhawan and Diljit Dosanjh. Notably, it features Suniel Shetty's son, Ahan Shetty, in a significant role.
A Father's Pride and Gratitude
Shetty expressed immense gratitude towards the filmmakers for offering his son this opportunity. Ahan made his debut in the 2021 film "Tadap."
"This is only his second film, and he has been entrusted with a massive responsibility," Shetty said, beaming with pride. "To land the role of a naval officer so early in his career is extraordinary. It might even be one of the first portrayals of a naval officer in mainstream Indian cinema. I feel truly blessed as a father."
The veteran actor addressed common misconceptions about industry access. "Many people assume doors automatically open for my son because he is Suniel Shetty's child. That is simply not the reality. He has faced his own share of struggles and challenges in life. That is precisely why my joy is so profound. He has secured a project of 'Border's' caliber. He truly could not have asked for a better launchpad for this phase of his career. My only prayer is that he has done justice to this pivotal role and that the film succeeds for everyone involved."

Describing the film as "incredibly special," Ahan Shetty became emotional while expressing his thanks. He acknowledged the unwavering support of his parents and his esteemed co-stars.
