Sonu Sood Calls for Industry Support as Rajpal Yadav Surrenders at Tihar Jail
In a heartfelt show of solidarity, Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has taken to social media platform X to extend his support to fellow actor Rajpal Yadav, who recently surrendered before the authorities at Tihar Jail in connection with cheque-bounce cases. Sood's message comes in response to Yadav's emotional plea, where he expressed feeling isolated and without friends during this challenging period.
Sonu Sood's Public Appeal on Social Media
Sonu Sood posted on X, emphasizing Rajpal Yadav's contributions to the film industry and calling for collective action. "Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry," Sood wrote. "Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us—producers, directors, colleagues—to stand together."
In his post, Sood highlighted the importance of providing dignity rather than charity, suggesting a practical financial solution. "A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, it's dignity," he stated. "When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he's not alone. This is how we show we are more than just an industry."
Rajpal Yadav's Legal and Financial Troubles
The backdrop to this situation involves a long-standing financial dispute. In 2010, Rajpal Yadav secured a loan of Rs 5 crore from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. Unfortunately, the film performed poorly at the box office, earning only Rs 37 lakh, which led to significant financial strain for Yadav and his wife, Radha Yadav.
This resulted in multiple cheque defaults, and in April 2018, a magisterial court convicted both Rajpal and Radha Yadav under the Negotiable Instruments Act, sentencing them to six months' imprisonment. Despite numerous appeals, the legal issues persisted, with the outstanding amount escalating to approximately Rs 9 crore over the years.
On February 4, 2025, the court declined to extend the surrender deadline, prompting Rajpal Yadav to turn himself in at Tihar Jail. During this process, he made an emotional statement, revealing his sense of abandonment. "Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta. Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own," he said, translating to expressing his lack of funds and support.
Industry Response and Manager's Comments
According to reports, Rajpal Yadav's manager, Goldie, confirmed that the actor has received little to no support from the Hindi film industry amid his legal battles. When questioned about industry backing, Goldie simply responded, "I don't think so," underscoring the isolation Yadav has felt.
Sonu Sood's intervention aims to change this narrative by rallying the film community. His call to action not only offers immediate moral support but also proposes a tangible way for industry professionals to assist, such as through adjustable signing amounts for future projects, thereby restoring dignity without resorting to mere charity.
This incident has sparked discussions about solidarity within Bollywood, highlighting how financial and legal challenges can impact artists, even those with established careers. As the story unfolds, it remains to be seen how the industry will respond to Sood's appeal and whether it will lead to broader support for Rajpal Yadav during this difficult time.
