Her untimely death at just 31 years old continues to sadden fans who mourn the immense talent lost too soon. The actress passed away mere days after giving birth to her son Prateik, leaving behind a legacy that still resonates deeply within the film industry.

"Smita Patil used to say 'mujhe suhagan banake leke jana' (I should die a married woman)," Sawant recalled emotionally. "I used to scold her to not say things like this. She used to say this even to her mother who would also scold her."

The Final Makeup: A Promise Fulfilled

Sawant described the profoundly difficult circumstances surrounding Smita's funeral preparations. Her sister was traveling from Chicago and took several days to arrive, during which time Smita's body was preserved on ice and had unfortunately swollen.

The makeup artist shared the poignant moment when Smita's mother approached him with a specific request. "Her mother gave me a make-up kit and Amitabh Bachchan and other people were sitting there," Sawant remembered. "She gave me the make-up kit in front of them and told me that it was her wish to go as a suhagan. I started crying and I did her make up while I was tearing up."

Despite the emotional turmoil and challenging conditions, Sawant fulfilled his final professional duty to the actress he had worked with during her life. "I did her last make-up and I made her look very beautiful on her last day," he stated, completing the circle of a promise made and kept under the most heartbreaking circumstances.

A Son's Tribute to His Mother

In a touching development that honors Smita Patil's enduring legacy, her son Prateik has recently changed his surname from Babbar to Prateik Smita Patil. This meaningful gesture serves as a permanent tribute to his mother's memory and the profound impact she had both personally and professionally.
