Sharad Kelkar Opens Up About His Stammer Struggle and Journey to Overcome It
Known for his versatile work across television and films, Sharad Kelkar is also a prominent name in the voiceover and dubbing industry. However, few are aware that the actor once faced a significant challenge with speech itself. In a candid and revealing reflection, Sharad Kelkar has opened up about living with a stammer and the deliberate, conscious effort required to conquer it as he embarked on his acting career.
The Turning Point: No Option But to Improve
Sharad Kelkar explains that the pivotal moment came when he realized he had no alternative. "The turning point arrived when I understood I had no option. If I did not work on my speech, I would not have been able to act. That intent to do whatever it takes becomes extremely important," he states emphatically. This realization fueled his determination to address the issue head-on, setting the stage for his transformation.
Understanding the Cause: A Journey of Self-Discovery
He further elaborates on the importance of identifying the root cause of such speech challenges. "It is crucial to know why you have this issue. For some individuals, it could be medical or related to the tongue, which can be treated by doctors. It took me almost eight months to realize that, before fixing anything, I had to understand the cause," Sharad shares. During this introspective phase, he experimented with various techniques, including:
- Altering his speaking speed
- Slowing down his speech
- Attempting to speak faster
- Observing people who spoke fluently and effectively
Through these efforts, he discovered that his breathing pattern was incorrect, which was a key factor contributing to his stammer.
Improvement Through Conscious Effort and Discipline
Once Sharad identified the issue, improvement followed gradually through dedicated effort and discipline. The actor, who is currently seen in the TV show Tumm Se Tumm Tak and recently appeared in the web series Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web, details his approach. "I started controlling my breathing, and slowly it improved. Many people who stammer can sing well because singing follows a rhythm and a specific breathing pattern. Pranayama helped me a lot. If it is medical, you should consult a doctor. With the right guidance, it is manageable," he advises, highlighting the role of pranayama and professional help in managing speech challenges.
A Defining Moment with Keerti Gaekwad
Sharad also recalls a defining moment from the sets of the TV show Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka, where he worked with Keerti Gaekwad, now his wife. "On the first day, Keerti jokingly told her hairdresser about me, 'It will take him a long time to get the scenes right.' It did not hurt me, but it lit a fire inside me. Because I was a stammerer, confidence was always a battle. From that day, I started working seriously on myself, and that process still continues," he concludes. This incident served as a catalyst, igniting his resolve to overcome his stammer and boost his confidence in his acting abilities.
Sharad Kelkar's story is a testament to perseverance and the power of self-awareness in overcoming personal challenges, offering inspiration to many facing similar obstacles in their careers and lives.
