SAG-AFTRA Issues Notice on AI Recreation of Val Kilmer in Upcoming Film
Amid the ongoing debate about the use of artificial intelligence in Hollywood films, SAG-AFTRA has formally addressed the recreation of late actor Val Kilmer in the upcoming movie 'As Deep as the Grave'. The union shared its stance on this case, highlighting the importance of consent and legal standards in such technological applications.
Val Kilmer's Role and AI Integration
Val Kilmer, who passed away in 2025, was reportedly cast as Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist in the film. However, due to his battle with throat cancer, he was unable to film his scenes. In response, filmmaker Coerte Voorhees turned to AI to incorporate the actor into the project, securing approval from Kilmer’s estate and his children to proceed with the digital replica.
SAG-AFTRA's Official Statement
In a formal statement, SAG-AFTRA emphasized that the applicable collective bargaining agreement and state law require consent from the estate to use a digital replica of a deceased performer in a motion picture. The union noted that based on reports, the family's consent was obtained for Kilmer's AI recreation. SAG-AFTRA stated, "We take these obligations seriously and will continue to enforce strict compliance with both contractual requirements and legal standards. Any use of digital replicas must be transparent, properly authorized, and fully aligned with the rights of performers and their estate."
Director's Defense and Family Support
Last week, director Coerte Voorhees defended his decision to use AI, explaining that Kilmer was the ideal actor for the role, which was designed around his Native American heritage and ties to the Southwest. Voorhees added, "His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this. Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted."
Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, also expressed her support for the project. In a statement, she said, "He always looked at emerging technologies with optimism as a tool to expand the possibilities of storytelling."
How Val Kilmer Was Replicated Using AI
According to reports, the film uses archival footage and images provided by the family to bring Kilmer to life on the big screen. His voice was generated using old clips, as his vocal cords were affected following cancer treatment. This AI-driven approach allowed for a seamless integration of the actor into the production.
Production Background and Delays
'As Deep as the Grave' initially began before the COVID-19 pandemic, but production faced several delays, extending the timeline to a total of six years. These challenges highlight the complexities involved in filmmaking, especially when incorporating advanced technologies like AI.
