Ryan Gosling's Casting in 'Project Hail Mary' Hailed as a Dream by Screenwriter
In a recent interview, screenwriter Drew Goddard expressed immense enthusiasm about Ryan Gosling's involvement in the upcoming film 'Project Hail Mary', describing the casting as "a dream". Goddard revealed that Gosling was already attached to the project when he came on board, which instantly alleviated any concerns about the film's ambitious scope.
Confidence in the Lead Actor
Goddard told The Hollywood Reporter, "It was a dream. Ryan Gosling was already attached when they came to me. Any fear I had about how we were going to pull this off was instantly allayed by the knowledge that Ryan was doing this with us." He added that Gosling's versatility gave him creative freedom, stating, "He can do anything. Whatever I write, he's going to be able to pull off. That set a tone of knowing this was going to be really difficult but also knowing we were in good hands with our lead."
About 'Project Hail Mary'
The film is based on the 2021 science fiction novel by American writer Andy Weir. It follows the story of Ryland Grace, a school teacher and former biologist who wakes up aboard a spacecraft with amnesia, navigating a thrilling interstellar adventure.
Budget Ambitions and Industry Challenges
Despite widespread budget cuts in the film industry, Goddard insisted that 'Project Hail Mary' required a mega budget to realize its vision. He explained his approach to budgeting, saying, "A lot of my worry about the budget goes into the decision to do the project. Before I start writing, I want to make sure that what I think it's going to cost lines up with what we think it's going to take."
Goddard contrasted this with his earlier work, like 'Cabin in the Woods', which was designed to be affordable. For 'Project Hail Mary', he emphasized, "With this one, there was no cheap version of this movie. We're not making this unless we're big and swinging for the fences."
Justifying the High Budget
The screenwriter believes the film's broad appeal justifies its budget. He said, "It felt like the type of movie that you're gonna bring your kids to, you're gonna bring your grandparents to. That's what you're looking for to justify the budgets." Goddard also highlighted the collaborative effort with producers Chris and Phil, noting their expansive imagination.
He concluded with a determined note, "Once we've made the decision to say yes, we don't really think about the budget. It's more about what's going to make the best movie. I don't want to sound fully optimistic. It is sad what's happening but we're going to go down swinging. And we're definitely going down swinging with this movie."
'Project Hail Mary' is scheduled to hit theatres on March 26, promising a high-stakes sci-fi experience with Ryan Gosling at the helm.
