Rajpal Yadav, the beloved comic actor renowned for his iconic performances in films such as 'Chup Chup Ke', 'Bhagam Bhag', 'Phir Hera Pheri', and 'Hungama', has been a staple of Indian cinema for more than twenty years. In a revealing old interview, the veteran artist spoke with genuine affection about his long-time collaborator, director Priyadarshan, describing him as "like family."

"Priyadarshan ji is like family to me," Rajpal expressed. "A lot of my movies have happened with him, and he has given me so much love and respect in my career. He is one of those directors I still feel nervous before giving a shot because I know how much he trusts me and my ability. It makes me all the more aware to deliver exactly what he wants. I guess we both don’t like to work without each other, and I am glad that together, we have managed to entertain the audience in amazing ways till now."

The Legal Battle He Is Facing Now
In stark contrast to his cheerful on-screen persona, Rajpal Yadav is currently embroiled in a serious legal predicament, serving imprisonment in a protracted cheque bounce case. The issue dates back to 2010 when he borrowed ₹5 crore from a Delhi-based company to fund his directorial debut, 'Ata Pata Laapata', released in 2012. The film's commercial failure resulted in substantial financial losses and a subsequent dispute over loan repayment.
In 2018, a magistrate's court convicted him under the Negotiable Instruments Act for dishonoured cheques, sentencing him to six months in jail. This verdict was upheld by a sessions court in 2019. Over the years, accumulated penalties and interest have reportedly escalated the total liability to nearly ₹9 crore.
After multiple delays and an inability to settle the dues, the Delhi High Court refused to provide further relief, leading Rajpal Yadav to surrender at Tihar Jail on February 5.
His Emotional Words Before Surrender
Prior to entering prison, Rajpal Yadav reportedly conveyed his anguish in court, stating, "Sir, kya karoon? Mere paas paise nahin hain. Aur koi upaay nahin dikhta… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hain. There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own."
This poignant admission revealed a vulnerable and distressed side of the actor, far removed from the comedic characters he is celebrated for.
Latest Developments in the Case
During a recent hearing, the Delhi High Court criticized Rajpal Yadav for failing to meet his repayment obligations. The judge emphasized that the imprisonment resulted from his own inability to adhere to the settlement terms, rather than a judicial mandate.
"You did not go to jail because the court passed an order. You have gone to jail because you have failed to comply with your own commitments," the court remarked.
The bench has now requested a response from the complainant regarding Rajpal's bail application. The matter is set for further hearing soon, leaving the actor's immediate future uncertain as he navigates this challenging period.
