Rajpal Yadav Breaks Silence on Decade-Long Legal Battle Over Debut Production

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has recently opened up about the protracted legal battle surrounding his first film as a producer, 'Ata Pata Laapata'. The controversy, which dates back to 2012, culminated in Yadav surrendering himself at Tihar Jail this February over cheque-bounce charges related to a Rs 5 crore investment from producer Madhav Gopal.

Denial of Fraud Allegations and Accusations of Bad Intentions

During an exclusive interaction with SCREEN magazine and a subsequent press conference in Mumbai, Rajpal Yadav vehemently denied any fraudulent activities or loan default. The actor placed the blame squarely on what he described as the investor's "bad intentions," alleging that Madhav Gopal repeatedly altered their agreement terms—changes that Yadav claims he accommodated in good faith.

"This was never about fraud or defaulting on a loan," Yadav stated emphatically. "The issue stems from the investor's changing demands and what I believe were ulterior motives from the beginning."

The Origins: From 2005 Concept to 2010 Production

Yadav detailed how the project originated in 2005 when his friend Mithilesh Kumar expressed interest in backing a film concept. However, the 2008 economic downturn and an extended actors' strike that stalled multiple projects forced Yadav to reconsider his approach. He eventually decided to produce 'Ata Pata Laapata' using theatre talent rather than established film actors.

"In 2010, when I visited my village, Mithilesh mediated between me and Madhav Gopalji," Yadav recalled. "I specifically asked him to come to Mumbai and see everything for himself. He came down, watched approximately 70 percent of the completed footage, and that very evening offered to invest Rs 5 crore in the project."

The Agreement, Stay Order, and Escalating Tensions

According to Yadav, both parties signed an agreement in July 2010 stipulating that he would repay Rs 8 crore after the film's release in exchange for the Rs 5 crore investment. This was followed by two additional agreements. However, Yadav alleges that Madhav Gopal obtained a High Court stay order just before the film's scheduled launch, despite payments not being due for several months.

The High Court eventually permitted the release to proceed, and Yadav issued post-dated cheques as agreed. The situation deteriorated dramatically when Madhav Gopal called a press conference publicly branding Yadav a fraudster, which the actor claims severely damaged his reputation and the film's prospects.

Box Office Disaster and Financial Fallout

The legal controversy effectively sabotaged 'Ata Pata Laapata's theatrical run, Yadav revealed. Despite securing commitments for 1,000-1,200 PVR screens and having Amitabh Bachchan attend the music launch, the film ultimately played on barely 200 screens nationwide.

"Within just 24 hours, the film was completely pulled from theatres," Yadav lamented. "It was destroyed one day before its official release. I had personally invested Rs 10-12 crore, and the total production budget reached Rs 20-22 crore."

The financial damage extended far beyond Yadav himself, affecting over 20 investors—some of whom received refunds, others who remained supportive, and many who suffered significant financial losses. Yadav disclosed that he had mortgaged his property and taken bank loans to finance the production.

"A Rs 5 crore investment put Rs 20-22 crore at stake," he emphasized. "I firmly believe the investor should have allowed the release to proceed despite our disagreements, rather than taking actions that doomed the entire project."

Future Plans and Social Media Strategy

Yadav revealed that 'Ata Pata Laapata' has neither sold its satellite rights nor secured an OTT platform release. In response, he plans to release short clips on social media to showcase the film's ambition and the substantial effort invested in its creation.

"We shot for 76 intensive days," Yadav explained. "The film featured real artistes and genuine crowd scenes—no CGI enhancements. I want people to see exactly where the money went and appreciate the hard work that went into this production."

Explaining the Decade-Long Delay

Despite maintaining a steady acting career throughout this period, Yadav faced questions about why the legal case dragged on for over ten years. He explained that while he remains open to settling outstanding dues, he believes the investor deliberately pushed for continued litigation.

"Why would I have sought help from the industry if I were at fault?" Yadav questioned. "I am self-sufficient. The film industry has supported me for 25 years—it's like a family to me."

He emphasized his diverse income sources beyond acting and his unwavering dedication to his craft. "I have been part of this industry for 25 to 30 years, and I wish to continue for another 500 years," he added with characteristic enthusiasm.

Moving Forward Professionally

Professionally, Rajpal Yadav's career continues to thrive with multiple upcoming projects, including his much-anticipated digital debut. He has recently launched his own YouTube channel, signaling an exciting new phase in his entertainment journey.

Amid the ongoing 'Ata Pata Laapata' legal saga, Yadav attributes the entire situation to misunderstandings and what he perceives as ulterior motives rather than any wrongdoing on his part. He remains determined to publicly set the record straight while continuing to pursue his acting career with renewed vigor.
