In a heartfelt revelation, Tamil cinema icon 'Superstar' Rajinikanth recently shared a harrowing incident from the 1990s where his life was potentially in danger, and he was saved by the timely intervention of his friend and fellow filmmaker, K Bhagyaraj. The emotional recounting took place at an event in Chennai celebrating Bhagyaraj's 50-year journey in the film industry.
A Bond That Withstood a Crisis
While friendships in the glittering world of cinema are often considered fleeting, Rajinikanth highlighted his long-standing bond with Bhagyaraj as one that proved its mettle in a moment of real peril. The event, held in Chennai, was meant to honour Bhagyaraj's legacy, but it became a platform for Rajinikanth to express a deep personal gratitude that has lasted for decades.
Rajinikanth began his speech by placing Bhagyaraj among the titans of Tamil cinema. He noted that the 1970s introduced three "kings" to the industry: the legendary music composer Ilaiyaraaja, the ace filmmaker Bharathiraja, and Bhagyaraj himself. While Ilaiyaraaja ruled music and Bharathiraja commanded direction, Rajinikanth praised Bhagyaraj for his unique, multi-faceted prowess. Bhagyaraj demonstrated exceptional skill simultaneously in writing, directing, acting, and even composing music. The superstar also lauded him for creating strong and memorable female characters in his films.
The Fateful Day in 1995
The narrative then turned to a chilling memory from 1995. Rajinikanth recalled attending an event in Chennai to pay tribute to the legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan. Speaking with great emotion and passion, the superstar made certain remarks that, unfortunately, did not sit well with a section of the public. This soon sparked protests and significant backlash against him.
The situation escalated dangerously on one particular day. Rajinikanth was travelling in a jeep when an unruly crowd surrounded the vehicle and began pelting it with stones. In the chaos and fear, he found himself utterly alone and vulnerable. "Everybody had gone away. I did not know where to run," Rajinikanth recounted, describing the sheer panic of the moment.
Bhagyaraj's Heroic Intervention
It was at this critical juncture that K Bhagyaraj emerged as his saviour. Seeing the danger, Bhagyaraj did not hesitate. He immediately took charge of the chaotic scene. Noting that the police personnel present were merely loitering and not taking action, Bhagyaraj sternly admonished them and demanded they perform their duty. He insisted that the officers provide immediate protection and safely escort Rajinikanth back to his home.
Only after Bhagyaraj's forceful intervention did the police swing into action, finally offering the terrified superstar the security he needed to escape the violent mob. Reflecting on that day with visible emotion, Rajinikanth stated, "I can never forget that day. He didn't just save me from a mob; he showed what it truly means to stand up for another human being."
