Priyadarshan Reflects on Vidya Balan's Iconic Dance in Bhool Bhulaiyaa

In a recent interview ahead of his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla, acclaimed director Priyadarshan revisited the making of his 2007 blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa. He specifically highlighted Vidya Balan's electrifying performance in the song Mere Dholna, which became a defining moment in the film and her career.

Overcoming Doubts with Determination

Priyadarshan shared with Variety India that Vidya Balan initially faced skepticism about her dancing abilities, even from renowned filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan. "There was a time when people used to think that Vidya could not dance," the director recalled. "And she told me, 'I will take it as a big challenge.'"

To master the complex classical movements, Vidya Balan dedicated herself to rigorous practice for 35–40 days. Priyadarshan emphasized her commitment, noting that she performed alongside Vineeth Radhakrishnan, one of India's finest classical dancers, and matched his energy flawlessly.

A Triumph That Silenced Critics

The release of Mere Dholna transformed perceptions overnight. Priyadarshan recounted how Farah Khan, who had previously dismissed Vidya's skills, called to express admiration after seeing the song. "Vidya came and told me, 'I will never forget this song in my life because someone who once told me I cannot dance, Farah Khan, has appreciated me for it,'" he said.

Additionally, acclaimed dancer and actress Shobhana praised the performance, telling Vidya it was a career highlight she could never replicate. This validation turned the track into one of Bollywood's most iconic songs and a key element of the film's success.

The Legacy of Bhool Bhulaiyaa

Bhool Bhulaiyaa captivated audiences with its eerie plot set in a haunted Rajasthan palace. The story follows Siddharth (Shiney Ahuja) and his wife Avni (Vidya Balan) as they encounter the vengeful ghost Manjulika, with psychiatrist Dr. Aditya Shrivastav (Akshay Kumar) unraveling the mystery.

Vidya Balan's chilling portrayal of Manjulika, especially in the Mere Dholna sequence, remains a standout horror moment in Indian cinema. Her ability to blend dance with dramatic intensity earned widespread acclaim and cemented her role as legendary.

Priyadarshan's reflections underscore how dedication and perseverance can overcome initial doubts, creating timeless cinematic achievements. As he prepares for Bhooth Bangla, this story serves as a reminder of the artistry behind Bollywood's beloved classics.
