Pratik and Bhamini Gandhi Reveal Their Unconventional Love Philosophy
For actor-couple Pratik Gandhi and Bhamini Oza Gandhi, who tied the knot in 2008, love transcends traditional celebrations and commercial gestures. In an exclusive Valentine's Day conversation, the couple opened up about their relationship dynamics, shared history, and upcoming professional collaboration in Hansal Mehta's groundbreaking series Gandhi.
Love Beyond Valentine's Week Celebrations
Pratik Gandhi confessed his unconventional approach to romantic celebrations. "I have never celebrated Valentine's Week. In fact, during my college years, I would actually laugh at people who observed Teddy Day," he revealed. "For me, genuine love manifests when you can communicate with your partner without overthinking. Even comfortable silences between two people hold profound meaning. True love allows you to be completely carefree and drop all pretenses when you're with that special person."
His wife Bhamini Oza Gandhi offered a playful counterpoint. "You really shouldn't laugh at people who celebrate Valentine's Week. I personally enjoyed celebrating it during my college days. Observing Teddy Day can be genuinely fun. Even Sunny Deol appreciates teddy bears, doesn't he?" she quipped, highlighting their complementary perspectives.
The Foundation of Their Sixteen-Year Marriage
The couple identified several key elements that have sustained their relationship through nearly two decades together.
Pratik emphasized: "Honesty and patience have been the fundamental pillars of our successful marriage. That level of honesty can sometimes feel intimidating, but it has proven incredibly effective for us. Bhamini possesses an infectious vitality, and her laughter is truly contagious. I greatly admire her impeccable comic timing. I consistently attempt to organize surprises for her, though I must admit I fail spectacularly every single time."
Bhamini added: "I believe consistency has been absolutely crucial. We engage in regular disagreements, yet we always find our way back to laughter together. What I cherish most about Pratik is his complete lack of pretense. There has never been any awkwardness between us. I can discuss absolutely anything with him and remain completely authentic in his presence. Interestingly, I've even developed a taste for coffee through our relationship. We now enjoy daily coffee sessions where we debrief about our day. This ritual has become indispensable to our routine."
From Theater Festival to Lifetime Partnership
The couple's journey began two decades ago at Mumbai's prestigious Prithvi Festival.
Pratik recalled: "We first encountered each other at the Prithvi Festival twenty years ago. I was performing in a play, and afterward, Bhamini visited backstage where we had a brief conversation. We began sharing audition information and rehearsing together for various theater productions. Our first official date occurred nearly two-and-a-half years after that initial meeting. We visited a cafe in Andheri, neither of us being coffee drinkers at the time. Uncertain what to order, I called my brother who suggested a cappuccino costing ₹160, which we shared between us."
He continued emotionally: "I always held affection for her. When I first met her father, he inquired, 'Have you considered everything properly? If you need more time to decide, take it now!' Our wedding still feels somewhat dreamlike. Marrying the person you love represents life's greatest blessing. We continue to have arguments and disagreements, but the beautiful evolution of our relationship is that our reconciliation time has become significantly faster. We've grown together profoundly, and sometimes it feels like we're parenting each other as well."
Bhamini shared her perspective: "Our mutual friend Kajal introduced us, and we bonded immediately over our shared passion for theater. During our courtship, Pratik once rented a car for several hours on my birthday. We had a marvelous time culminating in dinner at an elegant restaurant—it felt like a genuine fairy tale. Since we shared identical work ethics, we developed an exceptional friendship. Pratik's parents adored playing antakshari, and he mentioned they were thrilled about welcoming a daughter-in-law who loved classic songs and could participate in their musical games."
She reflected on their growth: "It has been a magnificent journey together thus far. When Pratik mentions how we've grown together, it feels incredibly special. In our twenties, when we encountered couples married for twenty-five or thirty years who spoke about growing together, we would feel envious and think, 'Our time will come too.' And that moment has truly arrived."
The Hilarious Proposal That Became Family Lore
Pratik recounted one of their most memorable relationship milestones with humor.
"I resided in Parla, Mumbai, with my brother and cousin. One day, I announced my intention to propose to Bhamini, who was scheduled to visit around 7:30 PM. While I was out handling errands, my brother beautifully decorated our home with flowers and candles. He even instructed our cook, Sunita taai, not to come that evening. When Bhamini arrived, she seemed surprised to find me alone. Just as I was contemplating how to pose the question, Sunita taai unexpectedly appeared and declared, 'I will prepare theplas. Why do you people eat outside food every day?' Eventually, my brother contacted her, and she emerged from the kitchen smiling, asking, 'Oh, so you're not cooking dinner today?' She made the situation completely obvious! I will never forget that day—it was absolutely hilarious."
Historic Screen Collaboration in 'Gandhi' Series
The couple expressed tremendous excitement about their professional collaboration in Hansal Mehta's Gandhi, the first Indian series to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival's Primetime programme last year.
Pratik explained: "While we've collaborated extensively in theater, we're particularly thrilled about sharing screen space in such a monumental project. Our off-screen relationship dynamic helped us create additional depth and authenticity for our respective characters."
Bhamini added enthusiastically: "Sharing screen space has remained on our wish list for numerous years! I'm absolutely delighted that it's finally materializing. Every single day during the shoot felt like a special treat for both of us."
The couple's journey—from theater enthusiasts to life partners and now co-stars in a historically significant series—demonstrates how shared passions, honesty, and consistent growth can create an enduring partnership that thrives both personally and professionally.
