Odia Music Icon Abhijit Majumdar Succumbs to Illness at 54
The Odia music industry is mourning the loss of celebrated composer and singer Abhijit Majumdar, who passed away on Sunday at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after a prolonged battle with multiple health issues. He was 54 years old.
Prolonged Medical Battle at AIIMS
Majumdar had been undergoing treatment at the premier medical institute for nearly five months, having been admitted in a comatose state on September 4 last year. According to an official bulletin from AIIMS, the musician was suffering from numerous comorbid conditions that complicated his treatment.
The medical report detailed his complex health challenges:
- Neurological disorder and osmotic demyelination syndrome
- Chronic liver disease with multiple complications
- Double pneumonia and bloodstream infection
- Hypertension and hypothyroidism
- Nutritional deficiency and other systemic issues
Treatment Journey and Final Hours
After extensive treatment in the medical ICU, Majumdar showed signs of improvement and was transferred to the medicine ward on November 10 last year for continuing care. The bulletin noted that he had become conscious and was following simple commands while on a tracheostomy tube, with stable vital signs.
"He was planned for discharge," the medical report stated, "but could not be discharged due to family and personal reasons."
Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated when he developed an infection on January 23. Despite standard protocol treatment, he didn't respond positively and developed septic shock. The final moments came on Sunday morning when he suffered cardiac arrest at 7:43 am.
"CPR was started as per protocol," the bulletin added. "However, despite all resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived and was clinically declared dead at 9:02 am."

Abhijit Majumdar leaves behind a rich musical legacy, having composed music for numerous blockbuster Odia films that earned him a massive fan following across Odisha. Originally from Sambalpur, he had been residing in Cuttack for the last two and a half decades, where he composed both film and album songs that became integral to Odia popular culture.
His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief from all sections of society. Well-wishers, friends, and family members paid their last respects at his Cuttack residence, while condolences poured in from across the political and cultural spectrum.
