No One Killed Jessica Turns 15: Myra Karn Reveals Why She Never Acted Again
No One Killed Jessica 15 Years: Myra Karn's Only Role

Marking a significant milestone in Hindi cinema, the hard-hitting drama 'No One Killed Jessica' completed 15 years on January 7. The film, which remains a powerful commentary on society and justice, continues to resonate with audiences for its gripping narrative and stellar performances.

The Unlikely Debut of Myra Karn

Directed by Raj Kumar Gupta, the 2011 film featured a rare and acclaimed collaboration between Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan. However, it also introduced Myra Karn as Jessica Lall, in a brief but profoundly impactful performance that left a lasting impression. Despite the praise for her debut, Karn chose a path away from the spotlight.

In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama on the film's 15th anniversary, Karn reflected on her one and only acting role. "I am from an academic background. I am an electronics and communication engineer with a first-class distinction," she stated. "Meanwhile, I had no interest in acting. Hence, I took up the role for fun's sake."

How a Photograph Led to the Perfect Casting

Director Raj Kumar Gupta revealed the unique reason behind casting his friend, Myra Karn. He explained that a famous photograph of the real Jessica Lall, featuring a bright smile, constantly reminded him of Karn. "Myra and I were friends... Myra also has a great smile and laugh," Gupta said. "So, whenever I saw Jessica's photograph, I used to be reminded of Myra."

Convincing her, however, was a challenge. "She thought I was joking and pulling her leg," Gupta recalled. After much persuasion, she finally auditioned. His direction was simple: "You be what you are. Do nothing else." Karn aced the audition and was signed for the film.

Life Beyond the Camera: From Actor to First Reader

Myra Karn vividly remembers her first scene with co-star Vidya Balan, where Sabrina tries to wake Jessica up. She praised Balan, calling her "fabulous" and "one of the best actresses and a very good person."

Despite the film's success, Karn never intended to pursue acting. She returned to her roots and now works behind the scenes. Interestingly, she continues her creative partnership with Gupta as his trusted first reader. "Whenever I finish the script, she's the first one to read it," the director credited, valuing her honest feedback.

Looking back at the film's legacy, Karn emphasized its enduring relevance. "It's not just a film; it's a statement on our society and the world we are living in," she said, reaffirming why 'No One Killed Jessica' remains a landmark in Indian cinema fifteen years after its release.
