Casting Director Mukesh Chhabra Reveals Extensive Search for Dhurandhar's Female Lead
In a recent exclusive interview, renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra, the mastermind behind the blockbuster Dhurandhar film franchise, has disclosed fascinating details about the casting process for the female lead role. Chhabra revealed that numerous established actresses actively pursued the opportunity to star opposite Ranveer Singh in the espionage thriller, but the production team ultimately made a deliberate choice to select a completely fresh face.
Why Established Actresses Were Not Considered
Chhabra explained in his conversation with Bollywood Hungama that both he and director Aditya Dhar received numerous messages from actresses expressing their desire to be cast opposite Ranveer Singh. "Many people were messaging Aditya, saying they wanted to be cast opposite Ranveer; I was getting messages too," Chhabra revealed. However, he emphasized that they had a very specific vision for the character of Yalina.
The casting director elaborated on their crucial decision-making process: "I told Aditya very clearly, 'We need a face that looks like it truly belongs to that place, without any prior baggage.'" This requirement was particularly important because the narrative involves Ranveer Singh's character meeting Yalina in Pakistan, necessitating an actress who could authentically inhabit that world without audiences having preconceived notions from previous roles.
The Extensive Audition Process That Led to Sara Arjun
Chhabra detailed the exhaustive search that ultimately led to Sara Arjun's selection. The production team conducted an astonishing 1,200 to 1,300 auditions before making their final decision. "We were clear that if we were entering that world, it should be a complete surprise who the girl is," Chhabra explained about their creative approach.
Despite Sara Arjun having previous experience as a child actor, Chhabra emphasized that she had never featured as a lead actress in a Bollywood film before, making her the perfect "new face" they were seeking. "We conducted so many auditions—around 1200 to 1300—and then we finalized Sara after her audition. We were also craving a new face," he shared, highlighting how Arjun's lack of mainstream lead experience actually worked in her favor for this particular role.
