Mithila Palkar Opens Up About Comedy Debut and Aamir Khan's Role in Happy Patel
Mithila Palkar is stepping into the world of full-scale comedy and action with her latest film, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos. The movie released today marks a significant milestone in her ten-year career. In an exclusive chat, she shared insights about the project and her journey.
Landing the Role Through a Unique Audition Process
Palkar revealed that she got the part through a standard audition process, but with a twist. The casting director informed her that directors Vir Das and Kavi Shastri would personally conduct the readings. She participated in a Zoom call reading, which served as her official audition. Soon after, everything fell into place for her.
Hoping for Aamir Khan's Approval
With Aamir Khan backing the film and even taking a minor role, Palkar expressed her nervousness about his involvement. She admitted that even after Vir and Kavi liked her audition, she constantly worried about Aamir's opinion. "I was hoping he also likes it," she said. When they finally met, Aamir told her, "You did a good job and welcome aboard." Hearing those words from him felt like a huge compliment.
Working with Vir Das on Comedy
Palkar described working with Vir Das as a learning experience. He gave her a key note: "Play the lines and not the comedy." This advice helped her focus on the situation's natural humor rather than trying to be funny. She enjoyed the scope for improvisation on set, calling herself a "wide-eyed kid" trying to absorb everything. She also praised co-star Mona Singh for her incredible range and performance.
Reflecting on the OTT Revolution
As one of the early movers in OTT with Little Things, Palkar shared her views on the streaming revolution. She disagreed that platforms have become less risk-averse. Instead, she highlighted the diversity of content now available. "The slate has more range, and the audience now has the right to choose," she explained, adding that she often struggles to keep up with new releases.
Memorable Experiences with Irrfan Khan
Palkar fondly recalled working with the late Irrfan Khan in Karwaan. She mentioned his curiosity about the OTT space and how he would ask her questions about it. His deadpan comic timing amazed her, making it hard not to laugh during takes. "How are you doing that with a straight face?" she would often ask him.
Upcoming Comedy with Priyadarshan
Palkar is also working on Bhoot Bangla with director Priyadarshan, featuring comic greats like Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal. She described the set as a "well-oiled machine" with great rapport among the team. Priyadarshan's unique direction style, where he visualizes the entire edit in his mind, impressed her deeply.
