Malayalam Filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan Arrested Over Sexual Assault Allegations
Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan has been arrested after a young actress filed a formal sexual assault complaint against him. According to police reports, the authorities acted swiftly on her detailed statement, leading to his arrest and subsequent judicial custody for a period of 14 days. He is currently being held at the Ernakulam Sub Jail as the legal proceedings unfold.
Women in Cinema Collective Reacts Strongly to the Arrest
Amid the arrest, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) shared a lengthy and impactful note on their official Instagram handle. Reacting to the development, they expressed deep concern, stating, “Yet another grave allegation by a young actress has shaken Kerala.” The collective raised critical questions about the systemic failures that enable such incidents, asking, “Where does this audacity of perpetrators come from? From a system that simply does not function.”
The group highlighted significant concerns regarding the lack of effective implementation of safety measures despite existing regulations. “Why are safety systems not working even after rules were made? These systems cannot exist merely on paper,” they emphasized, pointing to gaps in enforcement and accountability.
Concluding their statement, the WCC issued a strong call to action, urging the film industry to take responsibility: “The industry can no longer hide behind ignorance or inertia. Implement Internal Committees (ICs). Follow the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) guidelines. Prioritise safety above all else.”
Details of the Allegations at Film Shoot Location
For context, the young actress, who is currently working on Ranjith Balakrishnan's ongoing film project, has alleged that he entered her caravan without permission at a shooting location in Fort Kochi. She claims that he attempted to sexually assault her during this unauthorized entry. The police have registered a formal case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, reflecting the seriousness of the allegations.
Law enforcement officials have noted that the actress was profoundly affected by the incident. They described her as “traumatized” and revealed that she required extensive counselling and psychiatric treatment before she could muster the strength to come forward and file an official complaint. This underscores the emotional and psychological toll such experiences can have on survivors.
Ranjith Balakrishnan Denies Allegations and Legal Proceedings
After being sent to judicial custody, Ranjith Balakrishnan spoke briefly to the media, vehemently denying the accusations. He stated that the allegations against him are “false” and asserted his intention to prove his innocence in court. His legal team has confirmed that they are actively preparing to file a bail plea in the near future, indicating that the case will proceed through the established legal channels.
As the investigation continues, the case highlights ongoing issues of safety and accountability within the entertainment industry, particularly in Kerala's film sector. The involvement of the Women in Cinema Collective adds a layer of advocacy, pushing for systemic changes to prevent such incidents in the future.
