Mahat Raghavendra Opens Up on Career Strategy and Personal Bonds
In an exclusive conversation, actor Mahat Raghavendra reveals his deliberate approach to selecting roles, emphasizing quality over quantity. He shares insights into the recent re-release of the blockbuster film Mankatha, his upcoming Tamil projects, a significant physical transformation, and the enduring friendships forged with his Bollywood debut co-stars from Double XL.
Strategic Patience in Tamil Cinema
Mahat Raghavendra has been consciously waiting for substantial roles, avoiding typecasting and uninspiring projects. "I've not been signing many Tamil movies because nothing exciting was coming up," he explains. "I didn't want to do a project for the sake of doing it. I was waiting for the right moment because I want to stay here for a long time." He expresses a desire to grow through meaningful work, noting that most scripts offered were romcoms, which typecast him as a chocolate boy. He credits director Venkat Prabhu for being the only one to experiment with his roles, notably in Mankatha and Chennai 600028 II.
Reliving Mankatha's Magic
The re-release of Mankatha was a highlight for Raghavendra. "It was one of the best experiences I've had in recent times," he says. "It was a great feeling to be back in theatres to watch the FDFS with fans. To get to relive my first and Ajith sir's 50th movie was beautiful." He praises Ajith Kumar's humility, sharing that the star recently sent love and wishes to the cast through Venkat Prabhu during a meeting in Dubai.
Upcoming Tamil Ventures
Raghavendra is currently involved in two Tamil projects that promise diversity in his portfolio:
- A film with a reputed production house where he plays a funny boy-next-door character, aimed at resonating with common audiences.
- Kadhale Kadhale, a romcom targeting Gen Z, co-starring Meenakshi Govindarajan and directed by Premnath, a former co-director with KV Anand.
- A Tamil-Telugu bilingual focusing on a mother-in-law (Ramya Krishnan) and daughter-in-law (Aishwarya Rajesh) rift, with Raghavendra as the son caught in the middle. He lauds both actresses as "kickass performers," noting Aishwarya Rajesh as one of the industry's finest.
Bollywood Bonds from Double XL
Working on Double XL in 2022 was a transformative experience for Raghavendra, exposing him to Bollywood's distinct working style. "Working in Double XL was a gamechanger," he states. Through workshops, he developed close friendships with co-stars Sonakshi Sinha, Huma Qureshi, and Zaheer Iqbal. "All of us became close friends. We keep chatting every now and then and even play Ludo together. We even have a group for it!" He visits Mumbai to hang out with them and attended Sonakshi and Zaheer's wedding with his wife.
Physical Transformation and Wellness
Raghavendra has undergone a complete physical transformation, emphasizing the mental benefits of fitness. "Your brain functions differently when you work out every day, and you'll get a confidence boost," he asserts. He warns against a sedentary lifestyle, stating it hampers mental function. "To be fit, your lifestyle has to change, and you should opt for a clean diet." This holistic approach underscores his commitment to personal and professional growth.
