From Box Office Disaster to Cult Classic: The Remarkable Revival of 'Laila Majnu'
In a candid revelation, actor Avinash Tiwary has opened up about the contrasting fortunes of his 2018 film 'Laila Majnu', which experienced a dramatic transformation from a commercial failure to a celebrated cult favorite. The film, starring Tiwary, was originally pulled from theaters after just three days due to poor box office performance, but its 2023 re-release turned it into an unexpected success story, earning double its original revenue and enjoying a theatrical run of over a month.
A Shift in Public Perception and Industry Attitudes
Avinash Tiwary noted a significant change in people's attitudes following the re-release success. In an interview with News 18, he shared, "One thing I’ve understood over the years is that yahaan kisi ko kuch nahi pata. Nobody knows anything. If a film of mine works, they’ll laud me and then come to me for advice. After Laila Majnu re-released and became a success, so many people came to me asking for advice." He added that he now responds as if he is an expert, whereas before the success, the narrative was very different, with people often pitying him.
Reflecting on the industry's culture, Tiwary remarked, "I’ve also started talking to them like I’m some expert. Prior to that, they would say, ‘Arrey, bechara!’ The idea of self-importance in this industry is so much. Everyone thinks so highly of themselves." This shift underscores the fickle nature of Bollywood, where success can rapidly alter perceptions and interactions.
Defying Industry Templates and Embracing Unique Opportunities
Avinash Tiwary believes he has always had access to opportunities despite lacking a blockbuster film to his name. He sees himself as an exception where usual industry rules do not apply. "My first film ensured what I’m capable of and the industry fairly got an understanding of it. The rest of it was a product of how destiny unraveled itself. I don’t have a blockbuster to my name to show off but I’ve worked with the biggest production houses of this country," he explained.
He pointed out that he did not even have 100,000 Instagram followers until 2024, yet he continued to headline projects. The actor has taken on parallel leads in 'Madgaon Express' and 'The Mehta Boys', and antagonist parts in 'O’Romeo' and 'Khakee: The Bihar Chapter'. Tiwary refuses to worry about how these choices might limit future lead roles, stating, "If there’s something that wrecks and affects me the most is this idea of templates. I’ve never taken them seriously. I don’t believe in ki aisa hi hota hai, aisa hi karna padhta hai. All of this is just chatter for me."
The Ongoing Journey and Mixed Results
Meanwhile, his recent outing 'O.Romeo' has had a mixed box office performance, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the film industry. Despite this, Tiwary remains focused on his craft and career trajectory, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself rather than conforming to industry norms.
The story of 'Laila Majnu' serves as a powerful reminder of how public demand and timing can resurrect a film, turning initial failure into lasting success. Avinash Tiwary's experiences offer valuable insights into the dynamics of Bollywood, where perseverance and authenticity can ultimately lead to recognition and respect.
