In a surprising revelation, actor and filmmaker Kristen Stewart has publicly declared her keen interest in helming a potential remake of the iconic 'Twilight' saga. Stewart, who shot to global stardom as Bella Swan in the original film series, stated she would be open to re-adapting the beloved vampire romance franchise from behind the camera.
Stewart's Vision for a New Twilight
The announcement came during an interview at Variety's 10 Directors to Watch and Creative Impact Awards held in Palm Springs, California. When questioned about the possibility of a franchise reboot, Stewart expressed both admiration for the original directors and enthusiasm for a new interpretation.
"I would love -- look. I love what Catherine [Hardwicke] did, I love what Chris [Weitz] did, I love what all of the directors did with the movies," Stewart told People magazine. She reflected on the unique charm of the original films, describing them as "so themselves and weird and kind of squirrelly, and just so present in that time when they didn't really know what they were yet."
Imagining a fresh take with greater resources, Stewart enthusiastically declared, "Imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support. I don't know -- I would love to readapt. Yeah, sure, I'll do the remake. I'm doing it! I'm committed!"
From Bella Swan to Director's Chair
Kristen Stewart, now 35, became an international sensation portraying the human heroine Bella Swan across five Twilight films released between 2008 and 2012. The blockbuster series, based on Stephenie Meyer's novels, also starred Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, and a large ensemble cast.
The franchise saw multiple directors, including:
- Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight)
- Chris Weitz (The Twilight Saga: New Moon)
- David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse)
- Bill Condon (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 & 2)
Stewart recently praised Hardwicke's work in a December interview with The Hollywood Reporter, noting the challenge of directing the first film amidst high expectations. "Being able to withstand and organize that many opinions, and still make something that feels like yours, is near impossible to do," she remarked.
A Career Culminating in Directing
This interest in directing a Twilight remake follows Stewart's own directorial debut. She recently released her first feature film, 'The Chronology of Water' in 2025, which earned her a spot on Variety's 10 Directors to Watch list.
Speaking about her transition to filmmaking, Stewart highlighted a lifelong ambition. "I've been working on other people's films my whole life, since I was nine years old, and I feel like everything's been building to this moment," she shared with People. "It's just what I've wanted to do my whole life."
While no official plans for a Twilight reboot have been announced by the studio, Stewart's bold declaration has certainly ignited excitement among fans of the saga. Her unique perspective, having been the face of the original series, promises a deeply personal and potentially groundbreaking take, should the project materialize.
