Ken Karunaas Embraces Dual Role in Upcoming Film 'Youth'

Filmmaker Ken Karunaas is pulling double duty on the sets of his latest project, Youth, where he serves as both director and on-screen actor. The film promises an authentic look at adolescent life, drawing directly from the director's personal experiences.

A Personal Project Born from Real Experiences

Ken Karunaas reveals that Youth originated from a simple question he and his friends asked themselves: "Why can't we make a film on our school life?" This query sparked a creative journey that spanned two and a half years of dedicated writing.

"Youth is about a boy's life during the eleventh and twelfth grades," explains Karunaas. "It has no specific genre and no artificial twists or turns. We have clubbed real incidents that happened to my friends and me into the film's narrative."

The director describes the project as a character-oriented, coming-of-age story set between 2014 and 2016. "I wanted to showcase the effort that everyone showed toward love during that time period through this film," he adds, noting that the serious roles he was being offered professionally inspired him to create something more personally meaningful.

Meet the Cast of 'Youth'

The film features three prominent female leads, each bringing unique perspectives to their school-age characters:

Anishma Anilkumar plays a playful, non-serious character in her first role as a school student. "It has been some time since I finished school," she admits. "So I was tense about whether what I'm doing is coming off well." She praises Karunaas's ability to balance acting and directing simultaneously, calling it "inspiring."

Meenakshi Dinesh describes an immersive set environment where cast members automatically slip into a school mindset. "When we come into the set, all of us automatically get into a school vibe," she says. "It's a positive and super fun atmosphere on set, with no stress." Her character is portrayed as innocent but somewhat confused.

Priyanshi Yadav, known for Hindi television dramas including Pandya Store and Chakravarti Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan, takes on the role of Sonal, a North Indian girl raised in Tamil Nadu. The casting team discovered her through Instagram, believing she would suit the film perfectly.

"The main issue was language, as I don't know Tamil," Yadav confesses. "We did workshops for dialogue delivery. It was funny when I pronounced words in Tamil." She credits Karunaas's humble nature for making her feel comfortable throughout the production.

Supporting Cast and Production Details

Veteran actors Suraj Venjaramoodu and Devadarshni portray Ken Karunaas's parents in the film, adding depth to the family dynamics central to the story.

The production maintains a collaborative atmosphere, with constant scene practice helping actors embody their school-age characters authentically. Anishma Anilkumar's involvement came through a fortunate coincidence—while shooting for Sirai, director Suresh Rajakumari frequently discussed Ken Karunaas, leading to her subsequent casting in Youth.

As filming continues, Youth stands as a testament to personal storytelling, with Ken Karunaas channeling his own adolescent experiences into a cinematic exploration of that transformative period between childhood and adulthood.
