Kashmera Shah Reflects on Three-Decade Career: From Dancer to Film Star
In a candid conversation on Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa's podcast, actress Kashmera Shah opened up about her remarkable journey in the entertainment industry spanning nearly thirty years. The actress, known for films like Yes Boss, Jungle, and Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye, shared intimate details about her early struggles, career milestones, and personal life with husband Krushna Abhishek.
Confronting Inappropriate Media Questions
Kashmera recounted a distressing incident from about a decade ago during a New Year's event press conference. "We were promoting an event with many celebrities present," she explained. "A reporter repeatedly asked Krushna which girl he would like to date, despite us being married. I had to intervene firmly."
The actress emphasized the boundary between on-screen personas and real lives. "No one would ask such questions to that reporter's wife. We are actors, but that doesn't mean our personal lives are open for such scrutiny. Kashmera Shah on screen is different from the person off screen, and both are different from the mother of my children."
The Foundation of Her Marriage with Krushna Abhishek
Addressing her relationship with comedian husband Krushna Abhishek, Kashmera revealed: "I love Krushna the most—after my mother, he comes first, then my children. I've given him the freedom to joke about me because roasting is his job and our love language."
However, she clarified boundaries: "I get angry when others drag his jokes about me. You don't know me; how can you make fun of me? There was a contestant on our show who crossed the line, and I confronted him directly."
Early Struggles and Breakthrough with Shiamak Davar
Kashmera's journey began with significant financial constraints. "When I asked my mother for Rs 6,000 for a portfolio at 18, she refused and insulted me," she recalled. A chance opportunity emerged during her college days when she learned about a dance contest judged by Shiamak Davar.
"I borrowed jeans from friends since I was wearing a skirt, performed, and was the first selected," she shared. "For two years, I worked as Shiamak Davar's lead dancer, which helped me develop discipline in diet and fitness."
The Pivotal Role in Yes Boss
After saving enough money for her portfolio with photographer Atul Kasbekar, Kashmera landed advertising commercials before her big break. "I got Yes Boss when Niki Aneja left the project," she explained. "The casting director from a Kumar Sanu music video suggested my name because they needed someone tall. I was paid only Rs 30,000 as a struggler."
She kept the role a surprise from her mother: "I directly took her to watch the film in theaters. Without makeup and in simple clothes, nobody recognized me."
Career Philosophy and Personal Maintenance
Kashmera discussed her selective approach to dance numbers: "I rejected around 20 songs and chose only 7-8. I have a good sense of music, so I pick carefully."
Regarding her enduring presence in the industry, she stated: "I've maintained myself—my fitness, my skin, everything—without PR, injections, or Botox. I focus on eating well and living right. What truly matters is hard work and blessings."
The actress concluded by reflecting on her longevity: "I've been in this industry for almost 30 years and believe I'll continue for many more. People have come and gone, but I've stayed true to myself."
