Karisma Kapoor Opposes Priya Kapur's Bid for Divorce Papers in Supreme Court
Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor has strongly opposed an application filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur in the Supreme Court. Priya Kapur, the third wife of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, seeks access to the divorce records between Sunjay and his ex-wife Karisma. Karisma's legal team labeled this move as "frivolous" and an attempt to dig out personal, confidential information.
Supreme Court Hearing and Objections
On Friday, the Supreme Court held a closed chamber hearing on Priya Kapur's application. The court directed Karisma Kapoor to file her objections within two weeks regarding the maintainability of the application. Priya Kapur's lawyer argued that details of the 2016 divorce settlement are necessary to understand whether issues raised by Karisma's children were already addressed during Sunjay Kapur's lifetime.
However, Karisma's lawyers countered this argument. They insisted the application serves no legitimate purpose. They emphasized that the divorce matter remains confidential between Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor. The legal battle centers on Sunjay Kapur's massive estate, estimated at Rs 30,000 crore.
Family Backs Confidentiality: Sunjay Kapur's Sister Speaks Out
Sunjay Kapur's sister, Mandira Kapur Smith, publicly supported Karisma's stance. In an interview, she called the divorce between Sunjay and Karisma a confidential matter. Mandira described Priya Kapur's court application as a diversion tactic from the ongoing estate dispute.
"It's aimed at diverting what is going on," Mandira stated. "Firstly, if my brother wanted to share this with her, he would have shared it with her while they were married. I don't understand why she is trying to play all this."
She stressed the private nature of the divorce, especially since the couple shares two children. "I think a divorce is confidential. They have children together. It's not like it's a divorce without children. I don't think it's anybody's business, except for the two people who are involved in it. It is none of her business," Mandira added.
The Core Legal Battle: A Rs 30,000 Crore Estate Dispute
The application for divorce records forms part of a larger, bitter legal fight. Karisma Kapoor's children, Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, are contesting their late father's will in the Delhi High Court. They allege the will is "forged and fabricated." This will reportedly leaves almost the entire estate to Priya Kapur, excluding Sunjay's children from his marriage to Karisma, his mother, and his siblings.
Mandira Kapur Smith has previously made serious allegations against Priya. In an interview last October, she claimed Priya Sachdev was responsible for the breakdown of Sunjay's marriage to Karisma. "Lolo (Karisma) and Sanjay, my brother, were in a good place, actually. Kian was born. My brother was obsessed with his kids," Mandira recalled.
She expressed strong disapproval of Priya's role. "I think for another woman to not care about a woman who's just had a child is in bad taste. To come and disrupt a family is in bad taste. And I will leave it there," she said.
Family Opposition to Sunjay and Priya's Relationship
Mandira revealed that the entire Kapur family opposed Sunjay's relationship with Priya Sachdev. She recounted her father's stern disapproval. "Dad was totally against Priya. He said, 'He can never marry her. I don't ever want to see her face. And they can't have children.' That was very clearly said," Mandira shared.
This opposition was so strong that Mandira and her sister did not attend Sunjay and Priya's wedding in New York in 2017. "Actually, my sister and I didn't even go for the wedding. We didn't even go to New York for the wedding. I was very clear that my father was against this, and I wasn't going to stand by it," she explained.
Mandira believes things would have been different if her father were alive. "If dad was here, this wouldn't even have happened. If he was here, Priya won't be a part of this family," she stated.
Background of the Relationships
Karisma Kapoor married Sunjay Kapur in 2003. The couple had two children: daughter Samaira in 2005 and son Kiaan in 2011. After a prolonged legal battle, they divorced in 2016. Sunjay Kapur then married Priya Sachdev in 2017. They had a son named Azarias together. Tragically, Sunjay Kapur passed away in June 2025 at the age of 53.
The current Supreme Court application adds another layer to the complex and emotional dispute over his substantial estate. With Karisma Kapoor calling the move frivolous and Sunjay's family backing her, the legal proceedings promise to remain contentious.
