Kangana Ranaut Launches Fierce Attack on AR Rahman
Kangana Ranaut has publicly criticized music maestro AR Rahman. She accused him of prejudice and hate. This outburst came after Rahman reportedly refused to work on her directorial project Emergency.
The Social Media Confrontation
Ranaut took to social media to share her grievances. She posted a screenshot from Rahman's recent interview with BBC Asian Network. In her post, she directly addressed the Oscar-winning composer.
"Dear @arrahman ji," she wrote. "I face so much prejudice and partiality in the film industry because I support a saffron party. Yet I must say I have not come across a man more prejudiced and hateful than you."
She revealed details about her attempt to collaborate with him. "I desperately wanted to narrate my directorial Emergency to you. Forget narration, you even refused to meet me. I was told you don't want to be part of a propaganda film."
Ranaut Defends Her Film 'Emergency'
The actor-director strongly defended her film against Rahman's alleged characterization. She highlighted the critical acclaim the movie received.
"Ironically, Emergency was called a masterpiece by all critics. Even opposition party leaders sent me fan letters appreciating the film for its balanced and compassionate approach. But you are blinded by your hate. I feel sorry for you," she concluded with the hashtag #emergency.
Background: AR Rahman's Controversial Comments
This controversy follows Rahman's recent interview remarks that sparked debate across Bollywood. The composer commented on potential communalism within the Hindi film industry.
When asked about bias against people from Tamil community or outside Maharashtra, Rahman gave a nuanced response. He stated he never personally faced discrimination. However, he suggested changing power structures might be influencing the industry.
"Maybe in the past eight years, because a power shift has happened and people who are not creative have the power now. It might be a communal thing also but it is not in my face," Rahman said.
He described hearing second-hand reports about being bypassed for work. "It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their 5 composers. I say good, I have more time to chill with my family."
The composer emphasized his current approach to work. "I am not in search for work. I don't want to go in search for work. I want work to come to me; my sincerity to earn work. Whatever I deserve, I get."
Rahman's Stance on 'Chhaava'
In the same interview, Rahman also addressed his work on the film Chhaava. He acknowledged the film might cash in on divisiveness. However, he explained his decision to compose for it.
"The core of it was to show bravery which is why I decided to do it," he stated. The composer expressed feeling honored to score for a film based on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Rahman's original comments about communalism in Bollywood have drawn reactions from various industry figures. Celebrities like Javed Akhtar, Shobhaa De, and Shaan have publicly responded to his observations.
The debate continues to unfold as more voices join the conversation about inclusivity and power dynamics within India's premier film industry.
