"Money was coming in steadily. I consulted my accountant, asking, 'Are we in good shape?' He responded confidently, 'Yeah, we're great.' When I questioned if buying this house was feasible, he declared, 'Your kids' kids' kids will be financially secure.' He made that statement assuming the revenue stream would continue indefinitely," Fatone recounted in an exclusive clip from Investigation Discovery's new docuseries 'Boy Band Confidential,' which he executive-produced.
A decade later, the situation had dramatically deteriorated. After NSYNC went quiet in 2002, the income evaporated, and a new accountant delivered a harsh ultimatum: "You need to sell that house immediately, or you're heading straight for bankruptcy." Fatone expressed his disbelief, stating, "I was completely shocked. What happened?"
Christmas Eve Crisis: Power Cutoff During Family Gathering
The most poignant moment highlighting his financial distress occurred during a family Christmas Eve celebration. With relatives including cousins, aunts, and his immediate family gathered for dinner preparations, the electricity suddenly went out. The utility company had disconnected power due to unpaid bills.
"There was a specific incident during Christmas when they shut off electricity to my home because I failed to pay the bill," Fatone disclosed. "I was on the verge of bankruptcy while supporting a family—married with two young children. These are challenges ordinary people face too, but I had to navigate them under public scrutiny."
He elaborated to Entertainment Weekly that the cutoff happened in the afternoon before gift exchanges, while dinner was actively being cooked. "It was absolutely dreadful. Fortunately, water supply remained, but the power just vanished. We had to urgently contact the utility company to restore electricity. The situation was incredibly stressful," he recalled.
Abandoned in Financial Desperation
As his financial condition worsened, Fatone reached out to affluent acquaintances for assistance, but every plea was rejected. "I approached individuals with considerable wealth, hoping for support. Every single one declined, leaving me to solve this crisis independently, feeling utterly humiliated as a man," he shared in the documentary.
Consequently, he sold the mansion and relocated his then-wife Kelly and their two daughters, Briahna and Kloey, to his parents' residence. The family resided there for an entire year while Fatone tirelessly worked to rebuild his career. "I spent nearly a year in Las Vegas, working relentlessly to gradually restore my professional standing. Thankfully, circumstances improved over time," he noted.

Reflecting on the collapse, Fatone attributes the crisis to a complete absence of financial education during his peak earning years. Advisors consistently assured him everything was fine without providing substantive guidance.
"I never received proper financial training or advice on essential money management. My accountant at the time was inadequate, repeatedly saying, 'Don't worry, you're making ample money, you'll be fine,'" Fatone explained, emphasizing the critical need for financial literacy.

However, each person demonstrates growth, acknowledging past teenage experiences, learning from them, overcoming obstacles, and progressing forward," Fatone remarked. "This narrative emphasizes that there's always light at the tunnel's end, regardless of the path taken, even after facing near-bankruptcy like I did."
