Jisshu Sengupta Speaks Out on Controversial Songs and Audience Responsibility

Bengali cinema star Jisshu Sengupta is currently in the midst of promoting his upcoming film 'Bhooth Bangla', directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan. During a recent interview with IANS, the actor delved into the topic of controversial songs in the music industry, offering a nuanced perspective that places significant responsibility on the audience.

Audience Consumption Fuels Controversial Content

In his candid remarks, Sengupta emphasized that creators cannot be solely blamed for producing controversial tracks. "You can’t blame the lyricists or the creators for making such songs because people are listening to them," he stated. The actor pointed out a clear correlation between controversy and popularity, noting that songs which generate public outrage often attract the highest number of views and likes on digital platforms.

"Songs that create controversy get the highest number of views and likes. So why are you listening to them? If you don’t like it, don’t listen. Plain and simple," Sengupta asserted, highlighting the power of consumer choice in shaping musical trends.

Promoting Positivity and Celebrating Diversity

The actor revealed his personal preference for staying away from negativity, despite having opinions that could potentially stir controversy. "I can comment on something which might create controversy, but I don’t want to. Why create negativity when there is already so much around us? I am a very positive person," he expressed.

Sengupta specifically mentioned his admiration for legendary lyricists like Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, whose work he actively enjoys. He also celebrated the rich diversity of talent across India's various film industries, from Bollywood to regional cinemas in Marathi, Punjabi, South Indian, and Bengali traditions.

"There are many other lyricists who have done incredible work not just in Bollywood, but also in Marathi, Punjabi, the South, and, of course, Bengal. You can’t compare Rabindranath Tagore with any of them. In fact, I wouldn’t compare Gulzar sahib or Javed sahib with anyone either," he added, acknowledging the unique contributions of different artistic voices.

Audience Power in Shaping Industry Trends

Sengupta concluded by reinforcing the idea that audiences ultimately determine what content thrives in the market. "It is up to you what you want to listen to. Creators will create what they know best, and if people are consuming it, it will continue," he explained, citing his personal enjoyment of Gulzar and Javed Akhtar's compositions as an example of positive consumption.
