On a notably chilly Saturday evening in Kolkata, actor Ishaan Khatter set the ramp on fire. He turned showstopper for celebrated designer Anamika Khanna's showcase, held uniquely on an industrial vessel cruising the Hooghly river. The actor's commanding presence in a sheer black-and-white outfit, accentuated with bold silver neck and waist detailing, became the night's highlight.
Khatter later shared with us that the dramatic ensemble made him feel "both like a poet and a warrior." The event, however, was just the beginning of the conversation. The actor went on to discuss his critically acclaimed film 'Homebound', his personal style journey, and his enduring affection for the City of Joy.
'Homebound' Filled Me With Hope, Says Ishaan Khatter
For Ishaan Khatter, 'Homebound' represents far more than a career milestone; it's a project of profound personal significance. The film has been shortlisted among the 15 contenders for the Best International Feature Film at the Oscars 2026, following a successful run on the global festival circuit.
"Homebound is the film I have been most proud of," Khatter stated, reflecting on the Oscar nomination. He offered a unique perspective on the film's emotional impact: "If I’m honest with you, the film did not disturb me, it made me hopeful. From the very first reading, I felt an instant connection with the story that has only grown stronger as Homebound continues to find its place in history." He revealed that taking such a deeply Indian narrative to a global platform was an unexpected but beautiful journey for the entire team.
How His Roles Shape His Personal Style
Discussing his fashion sense, Khatter admitted that his style is often influenced by the characters he portrays. He pointed to his work in 'The Royals' as a particular turning point in his sartorial evolution. "At that time, I was finding my own sense of style, and I brought that to the show and back," he explained.
However, he emphasized that his choices are largely instinctive and mood-based. "Most of the time, it’s instinctive and more of a reflection of how I am feeling. When I’m at home, I really like to be in something that’s comfortable," the actor shared, giving a glimpse into his off-duty preferences.
Kolkata: A Cultural Hub and Emotional Anchor
Kolkata holds a special place in Ishaan Khatter's heart, less as a mere location and more as a cherished emotion. "There is a certain warmth in this city," he remarked, tracing his bond back to a childhood visit. "I spent three weeks here with my mom; she is connected to the classical music and dance world here," he recalled.
That initial connection has flourished over the years. "I have a lot of Bengali friends here with whom I share my love for literature, music and cinema. I think of the city as a cultural hub," Khatter added, explaining why Kolkata feels like a second home.
The actor also expressed his joy at tackling diverse roles, contrasting the privilege-laden world of 'The Royals' with the raw, personal narrative of 'Homebound'. "I’ve always wanted to bring that kind of diversity and range to my work. And I feel fortunate I could do both in a year," he said, looking forward to more such challenging projects in the future.
