The anticipation for filmmaker Sriram Raghavan's upcoming project, Ikkis, has received a significant boost following an early, glowing review. The film, which features the legendary Dharmendra in his final on-screen role and introduces Agastya Nanda, is scheduled for a theatrical debut on New Year's Day.
Early Praise from Industry Insiders
Ahead of its official release, a special screening of the war biopic was organized in Mumbai, attended by several film industry personalities. Renowned casting director Mukesh Chhabra was among the first to share his thoughts on the film, posting an emotional review on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Chhabra described Ikkis as a film "made purely from the heart," applauding its gentle and honest storytelling that lingers with the audience. His review carried a poignant tribute to the late veteran actor, Dharmendra. "Dharmendra sir… what grace, what depth. If this is your last film, it truly breaks the heart," Chhabra wrote, confirming that this project marks the actor's final cinematic appearance before his passing. Reports indicate Dharmendra was unwell during the film's dubbing sessions.
A Launchpad for New Talent
The review also showered praise on the rest of the cast. Chhabra expressed pleasant surprise at Jaideep Ahlawat's performance, giving him a special mention. He extended a warm welcome to newcomers Agastya Nanda and Simar Bhatia, who makes her Bollywood debut with this film.
Chhabra noted Agastya's "innocence and sincerity" that shine on screen, along with the "endearing eyes and lovely chemistry" shared by the new pair. Performances by Vivan Shah and Sikandar Kher were also highlighted as outstanding. The review culminated with high praise for director Sriram Raghavan, calling him "the man" and "the master" for creating a heartfelt and personal piece of cinema.
The Story and Casting Vision
Ikkis is a biographical war drama based on the life of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, who was only 21 years old when he displayed extraordinary bravery during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military honor, becoming its youngest recipient.
Director Sriram Raghavan explained his vision for casting Agastya Nanda, grandson of Amitabh Bachchan, in the lead role. In a statement to PTI, Raghavan said he was clear about wanting a fresh face that reflected the character's youth. "I wanted a new boy, somebody who's got absolute age on his face," he stated. After a brief meeting, Raghavan was convinced Agastya was the right choice, noting that the young actor reminded him of a young Amitabh Bachchan from the film 'Saath Hindustani'.
With this early positive buzz, Ikkis is poised to be an emotionally significant cinematic event, serving as a final tribute to a beloved star while launching a new generation of actors under the guidance of a celebrated director.
