GV Prakash's 'Youth' Music Initially Rejected, Then Offered 5X Deal After Viral Success
The Tamil film 'Youth,' starring Ken Karunas, continues its successful theatrical run while preparing for an upcoming dubbed Telugu release. A significant aspect of the film's appeal lies in its musical score, composed by the acclaimed GV Prakash Kumar. Recently, the composer shared a compelling behind-the-scenes story that has generated considerable attention within the entertainment industry.
Audio Company Initially Dismissed 'Youth' Album as Unmarketable
In an exclusive interview with Cinema Vikatan, GV Prakash disclosed that when he first approached an audio company to purchase the music rights for 'Youth,' they expressed minimal interest. The company representatives reportedly told him, "They felt it was a film with a new hero and said it wouldn't get much reach." Furthermore, they claimed the album contained no viral songs and offered only a nominal amount for the music rights, significantly undervaluing Prakash's work.
Viral Song Triggers Dramatic Turnaround and Five-Fold Offer
The situation transformed dramatically when one of the film's songs began trending online prior to the movie's official release. Witnessing the track's growing popularity, the same audio company returned to GV Prakash with a substantially improved proposal. "They came back and offered almost five times more," the composer revealed. However, in a bold move demonstrating artistic integrity, Prakash declined the lucrative deal.
"If they didn't value my music at first, I don't want to work with them later," he stated emphatically. Instead, he chose to release the album independently through his own music label, showcasing both confidence in his creative output and a commitment to supporting independent music distribution channels.
GV Prakash Recalls Spontaneous Creation of 'Pookal Pookum' Hit
During the same interview, GV Prakash also recounted the memorable creation process for his popular song 'Pookal Pookum' from the film 'Madrasapattinam.' He described how the melody came to him unexpectedly while traveling. "I asked my friend to stop the bike and recorded the tune on my phone," he shared. After developing the composition further at home, he presented it to the film's director, who initially responded with skepticism, saying, "There is no situation in the film for this song."
Composer's Conviction Transformed Doubt Into Chart-Topping Success
Undeterred by the director's hesitation, GV Prakash maintained strong belief in the song's potential. He urged the creative team, "Create a situation for it, this song is very beautiful." The production team subsequently devised a new scene specifically to incorporate the track. This decision proved immensely successful as 'Pookal Pookum' evolved into a major hit and remains one of Prakash's most beloved musical creations.
"I always trust my instinct when it comes to music," the composer added, highlighting the self-assuredness and creative imagination that have established him as one of the foremost composers in Indian cinema. These anecdotes collectively illustrate GV Prakash's artistic principles, business acumen, and unwavering commitment to musical excellence across different projects and industry challenges.
