Bollywood actor Gulshan Devaiah has launched a scathing critique on the perennial insider versus outsider debate, labelling constant complaints about nepotism as "trivial nonsense." In a characteristically blunt conversation, the actor urged aspiring talents to stop whining and focus on hard work instead.
"Stop Cribbing About Privilege," Says Devaiah
Known for his forthright views, Devaiah did not mince words while addressing the topic that often ignites Bollywood discussions. He expressed frustration with actors who bemoan losing opportunities to industry insiders, highlighting a broader perspective on privilege.
"Everybody has their advantages. We conveniently forget our own advantage and privilege—the privilege we have over millions of people who are less privileged—and we start crying about those who are more privileged than us," Devaiah told IANS. He termed this mindset "rubbish" and stated he is sick of it.
The actor's clear advice was to cease complaining. "I am not saying put up with injustice, but stop cribbing about this kind of trivial nonsense and put in the work," he emphasised.
Showbiz is Inherently Unfair: A Brutal Reality Check
Devaiah described the entertainment industry as fundamentally "unfair by nature," competitive, and unpredictable. He asserted that this brutal truth forms the very foundation of the business.
His message to newcomers was straightforward and unvarnished. "Accept the nature of the business. That is the nature of the business. Are you prepared for it? Only then come to the industry; otherwise, get lost. Do something else," he said bluntly.
Humility Over Entitlement is The Only Way Forward
The Bad Cop star further stressed that a sense of entitlement has no place in Bollywood. The real path to success, according to him, lies in humility and persistent effort.
"Who the hell are you to think that you deserve better?" he questioned. "Keep your head down, work, and hope for the best. There are so many things you can do instead of whining and cribbing and this nepotism nonsense. It never bothers me, and it should never bother anybody."
Meanwhile, Gulshan Devaiah is currently receiving acclaim for his latest project. He stars opposite Girija Oak in the series Perfect Family, which tackles the sensitive issue of mental health stigma in Indian households.
The show, praised for its nuanced handling and strong performances, also features seasoned actors Seema Pahwa, Manoj Pahwa, and Neha Dhupia. It is produced by Pankaj Tripathi and Ajay Rai and directed by Sachin Pathak, continuing to garner positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
