Gene Simmons Blasts Celebrities for Political Commentary, Urges Them to 'Shut Up'
KISS co-founder Gene Simmons has launched a scathing critique against celebrities who publicly voice political opinions, arguing that actors and musicians should refrain from lecturing the public and concentrate solely on their professional work. In a candid interview with TMZ, Simmons specifically targeted Ben Stiller and Mark Ruffalo while responding to their recent criticisms of President Donald Trump following U.S. airstrikes on Iran.
Simmons' Blunt Message to Entertainers
Simmons did not mince words, using direct and forceful language to convey his stance. "Basically, shut the f--k up," he declared. "Do your art and shut up. Nobody's interested in your opinions, that includes me. Who I vote for. Who I like." He elaborated further, questioning the authority of celebrities to speak on such matters.
"Who the f--k do you think you are? People in America work hard for a living and they don't want to be lectured to by people who live in mansions and drive Rolls-Royces. It's time for everybody in the entertainment industry to shut their piehole."
Simmons emphasized that the public does not care about the political views of stars regarding war or other national issues. He even joked that seeking foreign policy advice from actors is as absurd as consulting Kylie Jenner, highlighting his belief that entertainers lack the expertise to comment on complex political matters.
Stiller and Ruffalo's Political Reactions
Simmons' comments emerged in the wake of public statements from Ben Stiller and Mark Ruffalo criticizing Trump. Stiller recently objected to the White House using a clip from his 2008 film 'Tropic Thunder' without permission. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stiller wrote, "Hey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip. We never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie."
Ruffalo also voiced his disapproval after the Iran strikes. He shared an article on Threads about Jared Kushner, commenting, "He [Kushner] was sent to make sure we went to war." In an earlier post on X from March 2, Ruffalo urged his followers to contact lawmakers, stating, "No war with Iran! Two critical votes are happening in both chambers to stop Trump's illegal, devastating war."
Simmons' Evolving Public Stance
The report notes that Simmons' views have shifted over time. During a 2022 appearance on Bill Maher's 'Club Random' podcast, he expressed initial support for Trump's 2016 victory, believing that "a businessman is coming in." Later in the same conversation, he advised people to keep political opinions private and focus on voting instead.
His latest remarks reinforce this perspective, demonstrating that he continues to advocate for celebrities to stay out of political discourse. These comments have garnered renewed attention online, sparking discussions about the role of entertainers in public debates.
As the entertainment industry grapples with the intersection of fame and politics, Simmons' outspoken critique adds fuel to the ongoing debate over whether celebrities should use their platforms for political advocacy or remain silent on such issues.
