Eric Dane's Final Chapter: A Documentary Reveals His Tireless ALS Advocacy

Eric Dane, the acclaimed actor celebrated for his performances in 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Euphoria', dedicated the concluding phase of his life not to repose but to a vigorous campaign. He fought passionately for research funding, championed access to treatment, and advocated fiercely for individuals lacking the resources he possessed.

Months following his passing in February, a concise documentary now provides the global audience with an intimate glimpse into the intensity of his efforts until his final moments.

'Ring Every Bell': Chronicling a Determined Advocacy Journey

The film, entitled 'Ring Every Bell', documents Dane's advocacy work through his collaboration with the I AM ALS non-profit organization to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease. As reported by USA Today, the documentary's title originates from a phrase Dane frequently employed throughout his experience with this rare degenerative condition.

The documentary captures Dane's resolute drive for the reauthorization of the ACT for ALS, a legislative measure enacted in 2021 that allocates funding to scientific research and broadens access to investigational ALS treatments for individuals ineligible for clinical trials.

In a segment extracted from the film, Dane articulated, "We possess a bill that requires presentation on the floor for reauthorization, subsequently necessitating full funding. Failure to achieve this would result in individuals reliant on investigational therapy losing access to these vital treatments." He further emphasized, "I am exceptionally fortunate to receive excellent medical care and access to all these investigational therapies, which underscores the critical importance of advancing this bill, as it provides access to those who would typically be excluded."

A private screening of the documentary is scheduled for May 6 in Washington, DC, on an invitation-only basis, as confirmed by I AM ALS in an official news release.

Eric Dane's Final Months and Legacy

Dane passed away on February 19 due to respiratory failure, approximately one year after publicly disclosing his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. He was 53 years old.

USA Today highlighted that prior to his death, he made multiple trips to Washington, DC, during the autumn to lobby Congress for the renewal of the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act via the non-profit's Push for Progress initiative. This campaign strives to enhance treatment accessibility and secure an extra one billion dollars in federal funding for ALS research over the forthcoming three years.

I AM ALS additionally disclosed that several of Dane's former 'Grey's Anatomy' co-stars engaged in the campaign, although specific names remain undisclosed at this juncture.

A Posthumous Memoir: 'My Book of Days'

It has been characterized as "a profoundly personal work" and "a meditation on family, resilience, faith, sobriety, fatherhood, and the essence of living completely while confronting a terminal illness."

A news release dated March 5 stated, "Finalizing and publishing this book was Eric's explicit decision. He desired his daughters and readers to possess these words. Proceeding with publication as intended enables him to continue communicating, in his authentic voice, with the lucidity and bravery that characterized him. We are deeply thankful to share his ultimate creation."
