Elijah Wood Teases Potential Return as Frodo Baggins in New Lord of the Rings Film
Hollywood actor Elijah Wood has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at his possible return to the iconic role of Frodo Baggins in the upcoming Andy Serkis-directed feature 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum'. While the actor has not officially confirmed his involvement, he made it clear that he would not want anyone else to portray the beloved character as long as he is "alive and able" to take on the part.
Co-Star's Convention Revelation Fuels Speculation
Wood acknowledged that his co-star Ian McKellen inadvertently revealed details about the forthcoming movie during a convention last year. "It hasn't been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance," Wood told The Times U.K. He added, "I'm not able to officially say anything until it's announced, but I will say I'm thrilled with the prospect of another film."
The actor expressed a mix of excitement and protective concern about returning to Middle-earth. "It's always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together," he shared.
About 'The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum'
The highly anticipated film is scheduled for release in late 2027 and will explore the narrative gap between the end of 'The Hobbit' prequel trilogy and the beginning of 'The Lord of the Rings'. This new installment promises to delve deeper into the rich lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe, focusing on the complex character of Gollum.
Wood's Protective Stance on the Frodo Role
When asked about Ian McKellen's previous statement that he wouldn't allow anyone else to play Gandalf, Wood responded with understanding and agreement. "Well, no, and I totally get that. I certainly wouldn't want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I'm alive and able," he stated. "And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be, when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it's Gandalf. Because I'm also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together."
From Fellowship to Potential Return
Elijah Wood's journey with the character began in 2001 with the release of 'The Fellowship of the Ring', the first film in Peter Jackson's acclaimed trilogy. This role catapulted him to international stardom as he embodied Frodo Baggins, the humble hobbit tasked with the noble quest to save Middle-earth from darkness.
The potential return of Wood and other original cast members has generated significant buzz, with fans eagerly awaiting official confirmation about who will reprise their roles in this new chapter of Middle-earth storytelling.
