DMK Resolution on Karunanidhi Birth Anniversary
In a meeting held on Wednesday in Trichy, the DMK's Trichy central and north district units passed a resolution urging functionaries to celebrate the birth anniversary of former chief minister M Karunanidhi on June 3. The celebration will focus on promoting his contributions to the state through videos posted on social media platforms.
Election Defeat Analysis by K N Nehru
Deputy leader of the opposition K N Nehru addressed the meeting, stating that if the assembly election had been conducted in early April, the DMK could have formed a government. However, a 'wave of change' in the final days before polling denied them victory. Nehru noted that traditionally the fight is between DMK and AIADMK, but this time it shifted to DMK versus TVK. He remarked on the uncertain fate of AIADMK and its votebank, but emphasized DMK's history of rising strong from defeats. He credited TVK's tactical victory to social media, acknowledging that DMK focused extensively on AIADMK and ignored TVK.
Margin of Defeat and TVK's Strategy
The former minister revealed that DMK lost in 27 constituencies by margins between 1 and 2,000 votes. He admitted that DMK did not treat TVK as a political enemy and did not expect the election result to favor them. Initial surveys predicted TVK would get only 10-15% vote share, possibly a maximum of 20%. However, in the last few days before the election, the expected vote share surged to 25-30%. Nehru highlighted that TVK's strategy to sway people through social media was vital.
Future Plans and Resolutions
Ex-MLAs, union secretaries, and town secretaries were instructed to analyze the reasons for the election defeat and strengthen the party for upcoming byelections. Three resolutions were passed, including one thanking the people who voted for the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).
