Dia Mirza Speaks Out on Criticism of 'IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack'

In a recent interview, actress Dia Mirza addressed the significant backlash faced by the series 'IC 814: The Kandandar Hijack'. During an interaction on The Namrata Zakaria Show, Mirza discussed how the show's approach to storytelling has sparked discomfort among viewers, particularly when compared to other productions like 'Dhurandhar'.

Humanizing Characters Sparks Viewer Discomfort

Dia Mirza pointed out that the show's attempt to humanize every character, including the terrorists, has been a major point of contention. She explained that this narrative choice has led to criticism in an era where jingoism is widely celebrated. "The show was called out for humanizing all the characters, including the terrorists. I guess it is because we are celebrating jingoism too much now. We adore it," Mirza stated.

She emphasized that 'IC 814' takes a different path from what she describes as the current trend of enjoying and celebrating jingoism. "There is a trend to enjoy and celebrate jingoism, which our show is not. I don't regret it. It has such a balanced view and gives people the opportunity to see each side the way it was," she added, defending the series' nuanced perspective.

Dia Mirza Urges Artists to Raise Their Voices

Mirza also highlighted the importance of artists being vocal about their beliefs and the stories they choose to tell. She referenced veteran actress Shabana Azmi's philosophy, stating, "I am a big Shabana Azmi bhakt, and I follow her message that if art is not utilized to improve the lives of others, then what is the point of art."

She acknowledged that taking political stands comes with significant challenges. "It is not easy. We are trolled regularly. Beyond that, there is all kinds of intimidation because if you are not in agreement with what larger forces expect, then it is not easy," Mirza revealed, shedding light on the pressures faced by artists who speak out.

Bollywood's Silence on 'Dhurandhar 2'

The conversation also touched upon the contrasting reactions within Bollywood to different projects. When 'Dhurandhar' was released on December 5, it received cheers from numerous Bollywood celebrities on social media platform X, with actor Hrithik Roshan praising its epic scope despite political differences.

However, since 'Dhurandhar 2' arrived on March 19, most Bollywood figures have remained notably silent, including Roshan. This silence has sparked discussions about the industry's cautious approach to certain content.

Mixed Reactions from South Indian Film Industry

While Bollywood has been quiet, South Indian film stars have been more vocal in their support. Prominent figures like Allu Arjun, Jr NTR, and Mahesh Babu have cheered the movie and its actors, with filmmakers Ram Gopal Varma and SS Rajamouli echoing the praise.

On the other hand, actors Prakash Raj and Divya Spandana have condemned 'Dhurandhar' as "propaganda" and "jingoistic," highlighting the polarized views within the Indian film industry regarding nationalist narratives.

Dia Mirza's comments underscore the ongoing debate about artistic expression, political messaging, and the role of cinema in contemporary India, as creators navigate between balanced storytelling and popular trends.
