Camila Mendes Binge-Watched Reality TV to Perfect Her Role in 'Idiotka'
Camila Mendes Used Reality TV Research for 'Idiotka' Role

Camila Mendes Turned to Reality Television for Authentic Role Preparation

In a revealing interview with People magazine at the New York City premiere of her new film, actress Camila Mendes detailed the extensive research she undertook to portray a reality television producer in the upcoming comedy Idiotka. The 31-year-old star explained that she immersed herself in specific reality programs to understand the nuances of her character, Nicol Garcia.

Strategic Binge-Watching for Character Development

Camila Mendes told People magazine that she deliberately binged shows like Project Runway and HBO's streetwear competition series The Hype to grasp the tone and dynamics of reality television production. "I watched that one quite a bit, 'cause, tonally, it felt like this is more DIY reality," she shared, emphasizing how these shows mirrored the innovative spirit of her character's work.

"We're the cutting edge of reality TV. Like, we're trying to do things differently, and that also felt very in line with Nicol's character," Mendes continued. "We're not those cut and dry fashion shows, like we're doing it differently." This approach helped her embody a producer who challenges conventional formats.

Insights from Real Contestants Shaped Performance

Beyond screen time, Mendes took her preparation further by conducting interviews with actual participants from fashion competition shows. These conversations provided critical insights into the complex relationships between producers and contestants.

"They recounted 'crazy experiences' where producers initially seemed like their 'best friend' before becoming 'kind of manipulative,'" Mendes relayed to People magazine. "That was a very helpful perspective to have." This firsthand knowledge influenced her portrayal of Nicol Garcia's psychological motivations.

"So then I wanted to get on the other side of that and think, 'Okay, well if I were a producer who really took what I did very seriously, like a reality show producer, and I wanted to do my best work, what would that look like?'" she explained, highlighting how she balanced manipulation with professional dedication.

Grounding Manipulation in Good Intentions

In developing her character, Mendes focused on grounding Nicol Garcia's scheming nature in positive objectives. "I was kind of grounding her manipulation in a place that felt honest and well-intentioned," she said to People magazine.

"I think ultimately, with the character I play in this film, Nicol, she's really trying to uplift Margarita and give her the platform to succeed. And she's doing that by sort of planting a few seeds and being a little manipulative," Mendes elaborated, portraying a producer whose tactics stem from a desire to support others.

Film Details and Collaborative Environment

Idiotka, directed by Nastasya Popov in her feature debut, features Anna Baryshnikov as struggling fashion designer Margarita, with Julia Fox and Benito Skinner playing fictional reality show judges. Mendes praised the collaborative atmosphere on set, calling it "the beauty of this project" due to the involvement of many friends, and she particularly enjoyed working with Benito Skinner.

The film is scheduled for release in theaters on Friday, February 27. Camila Mendes' dedicated preparation, combining real-world research with artistic interpretation, underscores her commitment to delivering a compelling and authentic performance that bridges entertainment with insightful character study.
