Bollywood Actors Expose Harsh Realities of Film Set Exploitation

As Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa's debut production 'Toaster' premieres on OTT platforms, the film's cast is speaking out against widespread crew mistreatment in Bollywood. Archana Puran Singh, Sanya Malhotra, and Abhishek Banerjee have revealed disturbing practices by stingy producers who compromise basic welfare standards.

Archana Puran Singh's Shocking Revelation About Food Rationing

Archana Puran Singh recalled working with a notoriously tight-fisted production house, describing conditions so severe that crew members coined the phrase 'Ek boti, do roti' (one piece of meat, two rotis) to describe their experience. She explained how non-vegetarian food was strictly limited, with crew told to take only specific portions.

"We've experienced this a lot," Singh stated. "There was a very big production house which I don't want to name. If you asked any crew member about them, they would say, 'Oh, they're the 'one piece of meat, two rotis' kind of people.'"

She detailed how producers would enforce grueling 9-6 and 2-10 shifts that often extended to 12-14 hours without proper breaks. "They expect us to extend work hours and skip lunch breaks. This is a kind of kanjoosi (stinginess) mentality," she criticized, questioning how producers could deny food to light men working under harsh conditions.

Sanya Malhotra Highlights Systemic Issues Beyond Food

Sanya Malhotra emphasized that the problem extends beyond food rationing to complete denial of lunch breaks. "Some production houses don't even give us lunch breaks. Not just actors but crew members also bear the brunt of it," she revealed.

Malhotra contrasted this with the positive environment on 'Toaster' sets: "None of that happened on the sets of Toaster. Both Patra and Raj are really good. It's a plus when a producer is also an actor."

Rajkummar Rao Questions Basic Logic of Crew Neglect

Rajkummar Rao, who co-produced 'Toaster' with Patralekhaa, questioned the fundamental logic behind denying basic amenities. "I wonder why lunch breaks are not given. If the shoot begins at 12:30 pm, they expect us to keep at it till maybe 3:30 pm," he observed.

Rao pointed out a simple solution: "They can instead let everyone have their lunches and start the shoot at 1:30 pm. They should think about crew members as well. In fact, as actors, our assistants can come in and give us our lunch, but what about the crew? I really don't get it."

Abhishek Banerjee Calls Out Production House Stinginess

Abhishek Banerjee delivered the most blunt assessment, criticizing producers who deprive workers of basic dignity to save minimal costs. "Chhoti chhoti cheezon mein na, samajh mein aa jaata hai kanjoosi. Their idea is, isko kyun khilaaye? To save very little money, you're depriving people," he stated.

Banerjee noted that understanding comes from experience: "You understand these things when you work with a friend's production house."

About 'Toaster' and Its Cast

Directed by Vivek Daschaudary, 'Toaster' features an ensemble cast including Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Archana Puran Singh, Upendra Limaye, Farah Khan, Abhishek Banerjee, and Jitendra Joshi. The film premiered on April 15, 2026, marking Rao and Patralekhaa's first venture as producers.

The actors' revelations highlight a significant contrast between exploitative practices on many Bollywood sets and the humane approach demonstrated on their own production. Their collective testimony sheds light on systemic issues affecting crew welfare across the industry, from food deprivation to excessive working hours without proper breaks.
