Balachandra Menon Voices Strong Criticism Against Modern Malayalam Film Titles
Veteran actor and acclaimed filmmaker Balachandra Menon has launched a pointed critique against the naming trends of recent Malayalam cinema. In a candid interview, he questioned the creativity behind contemporary film titles, expressing that many leave him more amused than impressed.
Film Titles Fail to Attract Audiences, Says Menon
Balachandra Menon emphasized the crucial role film titles play in drawing audiences to theaters. He stated that the current trend in Malayalam cinema largely fails to create the necessary impact. "I feel like laughing," Menon shared when asked about today's film titles. "Titles like 'Aashaan', 'Shukran', 'Bha. Bha. Ba' and so on… If you make the audience go 'bha bha', how will the film run? What is all this? I really don't understand what the intention is."
According to Menon, these titles lack the creative spark needed to capture public interest and generate box office success. He believes that filmmakers should prioritize meaningful and engaging titles that resonate with viewers rather than opting for confusing or gimmicky names.
Revisiting the 'Samantarangal' National Award Controversy
Beyond his criticism of film titles, Balachandra Menon revisited a long-standing controversy surrounding his 1997 film 'Samantarangal'. He expressed deep disappointment over missing out on major National Awards despite the film initially being considered for top honors.
Menon claimed that 'Samantarangal' was leading in multiple categories before the final decision was altered due to alleged interference by a jury member. "A jury member who was part of the award committee that year told me this," Menon explained. "When the decisions were being made, Samantarangal was the best feature film in India that year. The best actor was only Balachandra Menon. The best director was also Balachandra Menon."
Allegations of Jury Intervention Changed Award Outcomes
Menon detailed how the awards changed at the last moment. "When it reached a stage where these awards were about to be given, a jury member from Kerala itself opposed it. He said the film had certain issues and that it could not be awarded. That's how the awards changed."
He added with regret, "If that original decision had been accepted, we would have become a legend in Indian cinema. That 'favor' was done by a Malayali himself. He has passed away now, so there is no point in naming him."
Despite this controversy, Balachandra Menon did receive recognition at the 1997 National Film Awards. He won the Best Actor award, and 'Samantarangal' received the Best Film on Family Welfare honor, though these were not the top categories he believed the film deserved.
Looking Ahead: Menon's Upcoming Project
On a forward-looking note, the veteran actor-filmmaker will next be seen in Nivin Pauly's upcoming thriller 'Prathichaya'. This marks another significant role for Menon in contemporary Malayalam cinema, showcasing his enduring presence in the industry despite his criticisms of current trends.
Balachandra Menon's comments highlight ongoing debates about creativity and integrity in Indian cinema, from film naming conventions to award selection processes. His insights offer a veteran perspective on the evolution of Malayalam filmmaking and the challenges it faces today.
