Badshah's 'Tateeree' Song Sparks Police Probe Over Vulgar Lyrics
Rapper Badshah is under investigation by the Haryana Police for his controversial song 'Tateeree', with authorities revealing that the artist has admitted to including alleged vulgar lyrics in the track as a response to competitive pressures in the music industry. The case, registered at the Cyber Police Station in Sector-20, Panchkula, on March 6, 2026, involves charges under Sections 3 and 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, due to objectionable content deemed harmful and inappropriate.
Police Investigation and Key Allegations
During police interrogation, Badshah explained that the girls featured in the music video are actresses, not real students, and shifted responsibility for the depiction of a Haryana Roadways bus from the Jind depot and a government school campus to the production unit head, claiming this individual must be aware of the details. In response, the Panchkula police have announced plans to question both the production unit head and the song's lyricist to further investigate the matter.
DGP Ajay Singhal of Haryana Police confirmed these developments on Saturday, emphasizing that such lyrics have a negative impact on schoolchildren and society at large. The police have highlighted specific concerns, including the video's portrayal of young girls in school uniforms discarding their school bags and fleeing from studies, which misrepresents educational environments. Additionally, the use of derogatory terms like "badshala" and offensive language directed towards women and girls has been cited as particularly troubling.
Controversy and Cultural Context
The song 'Tateeree' has ignited widespread controversy, with many critics labeling its lyrics as vulgar and inappropriate. The title itself derives from the Haryanvi word for the grey francolin, a bird native to rural North India, adding a layer of cultural significance that has been overshadowed by the contentious content. As backlash intensified, Badshah issued a public apology for the song, acknowledging the offense caused.
In a related move, the National Commission for Women has summoned Badshah and the makers of the track to address concerns over the indecent representation of women. The police have also taken proactive measures by removing the song from YouTube and issuing notices to eliminate the video from all social media platforms to prevent further dissemination of the alleged objectionable material.
Broader Implications and Legal Actions
DGP Ajay Singhal further noted that several songs by other artists, such as Masoom Sharma, have been removed from online platforms due to similar issues with objectionable lyrics. He warned that if such artists continue to perform these songs publicly, strict legal action will be taken against them. The police have clarified that anyone found creating or sharing reels or videos related to this controversial song will face consequences under the law, underscoring a zero-tolerance approach to content deemed harmful.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in the music industry regarding creative expression versus social responsibility, with authorities in Haryana taking a firm stance to protect public morals and the well-being of youth. The investigation continues as officials seek to hold all parties accountable for their roles in the production and distribution of the contentious content.
