Anupam Kher: Audiences Decide, Not Propaganda in Cinema

Anupam Kher Champions Audience Choice in Cinema Debate

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has firmly weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding cinema being labelled as propaganda, emphasizing that it is ultimately the audiences who determine what resonates and succeeds. Speaking at the International Film Festival Delhi 2026, Kher highlighted that the commercial triumphs of films such as Dhurandhar: The Revenge are a testament to authentic public preference rather than any form of manipulation.

'People Are Not Idiots,' Says Kher on Propaganda Criticism

Addressing the media during the festival, Kher dismissed the notion of propaganda in cinema with strong words. "I think we should ignore people who are calling cinema propaganda. We are putting too much energy into them. They are redundant and irrelevant," he stated. Reflecting on the box office performance of movies like The Kashmir Files and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, he told ANI, "Let's celebrate the success of these films. People are not idiots. They are not going to attend a 12 o’clock show that is housefull unless they genuinely like the film. People go to watch films because they enjoy them. I think we should say rest in peace to those who are calling it propaganda."

Cinema's Dual Role: Influence and Business

Kher also reflected on the broader impact of cinema, acknowledging its potential to influence while underscoring its commercial nature. "Can cinema change people? Yes, it can. It depends on the individuals sitting in the dark auditorium. But cinema is also a business, like any other," he explained. He further noted that while storytelling remains a core element, viewers ultimately extract personal meanings from films. "Many people run channels as a business; they don't do it just to tell a story. But if I go to watch a film, I may take something away from it," he added, highlighting the subjective experience of cinema.

Celebrating Tanvi The Great's Silver Jubilee Milestone

The actor took pride in discussing his film Tanvi The Great, which has remarkably completed 25 weeks in theatres, achieving a silver jubilee run. Calling this a significant achievement, Kher shared, "It’s a silver jubilee. It was my belief that we should run the film in limited theatres, and for it to be re-released and complete 25 weeks is a great accomplishment." The film features an ensemble cast including Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Arvind Swami, Pallavi Joshi, Karan Tacker, Nassar, and Iain Glen.

Training and OTT Platforms: Essential for Modern Actors

Emphasizing the importance of formal training in today's competitive industry, Kher stressed, "Today, there is no possibility of becoming an actor without training. I have survived 41 years in cinema and nearly 52 years in professional theatre, with over 550 films, only because I am a trained actor." He also credited OTT platforms for expanding opportunities across the entertainment sector, benefiting actors, technicians, writers, and directors, while noting that film festivals play a crucial role in fostering idea exchange and celebrating cinematic art.

Praise for the Delhi Film Festival

Sharing his enthusiasm about the International Film Festival Delhi 2026, Kher expressed admiration for the event's scale and energy. "I took a tour of the entire venue. It’s fabulous. The vibe is amazing. I'm very happy that my film Tanvi The Great is also being screened here," he said, adding his belief that the festival will continue to grow stronger in the coming years.
