Syed Naseer Ahmad gets AP Lifetime Achievement Award

In a significant recognition of scholarly dedication, the Andhra Pradesh government has conferred its prestigious lifetime achievement award upon noted historian and senior advocate Syed Naseer Ahmad. The award was presented by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a recent function held in Vijayawada.

A Lifetime of Documenting Hidden Histories

Syed Naseer Ahmad, 71, has devoted over five decades to meticulous historical research, with a particular focus on bringing to light the contributions of lesser-known and often forgotten freedom fighters. His body of work is substantial, comprising 26 authored books on Indian history. A central theme of his research has been highlighting the role of freedom fighters from the principal minority community.

His efforts have previously been recognized by the state with the Ugadi Puraskaram and the Kalarathna award, the latter being the highest honor bestowed by the Andhra Pradesh government. The lifetime achievement award adds another pinnacle to his distinguished career.

Unearthing Stories of Alluri Sitarama Raju's Allies

Among his recent significant contributions is research published on December 14, focusing on two key supporters of the legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju. Ahmad's work details the roles of Fazlullah Khan and Sheikh Madina.

Fazlullah Khan served as a deputy collector in Polavaram under British rule. His closeness to Ramakrishna Raju, Alluri's uncle, forged a connection with the revolutionary leader. Khan subsequently provided crucial assistance to Alluri Sitarama Raju during his armed struggle against the British in the forest belts of north coastal Andhra.

Sheikh Madina, hailing from Peddapuram, was a retired head constable. His critical contribution was training Alluri Sitarama Raju in shooting, a skill vital for the guerrilla warfare that defined the rebellion.

Mission to Recognize the Unrecognized

In his remarks, Syed Naseer Ahmad emphasized the core mission driving his work. "We have hundreds of freedom fighters who remain unsung and unrecognised," he stated. "I have been doing research for the last 50 years to highlight the freedom fighters who did not get due recognition despite their unparalleled contribution."

He further pointed out the unique dual struggle faced by many leaders from the principal minority community in the Telugu states, who fought concurrently against the British Raj and the Nizam's rule.

Ahmad's scholarly pursuit also includes a book dedicated exclusively to women freedom fighters from the Muslim community, ensuring their narratives are preserved and celebrated for future generations. This latest award underscores the state's acknowledgment of his invaluable role in safeguarding a more complete and inclusive history of India's freedom movement.
