PM Modi Conferred with Ethiopia's Highest Award 'Nishan'

In a significant diplomatic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with Ethiopia's highest state award during his visit to Addis Ababa on Tuesday. The prestigious 'Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia' was presented to him by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali at a special ceremony held at the Addis International Convention Centre.

A Recognition of Leadership and Partnership

The award was conferred upon Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his exceptional contribution towards strengthening the India-Ethiopia partnership and for his visionary leadership on the global stage, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. This honour makes PM Modi the first global head of state or head of government to ever receive this award, marking a unique moment in bilateral relations.

Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Modi immediately dedicated the accolade to the people of India. "I’m honoured to be conferred with the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.’ I dedicate it to the 140 crore people of India," he posted on social media platform X following the ceremony.

Deepening Historical Ties and Friendship

In his acceptance speech, PM Modi noted the profound significance of receiving the award from one of the world's most ancient civilizations. He accepted it with deep humility and gratitude. He specifically thanked his counterpart, referring to him with warmth as "my friend, my brother" Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.

PM Modi recounted a recent meeting during the G20 Summit in South Africa, where PM Abiy had extended a heartfelt invitation to visit Ethiopia. "How could I have turned down this invitation from my friend, my brother? So, at the first chance, I decided to come to Ethiopia," Modi stated, highlighting the personal rapport between the two leaders.

Education: The Cornerstone of Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Modi underscored the pivotal role of knowledge and education in nation-building. He expressed pride in the century-long contribution of Indian teachers to Ethiopia's progress and development. "We, in India, have always believed... Education is the foundation stone of any country. I am proud that in Ethiopia and India relations, the most significant contribution has been from our teachers," he remarked.

He also commended Prime Minister Abiy's leadership and his initiatives aimed at fostering national unity, sustainability, and inclusive development within Ethiopia.

A Milestone for the Global South

Looking forward, PM Modi emphasized a shared commitment to collaboration. "...Together with Ethiopia, we are committed to furthering such partnerships which can bring forth a solution to evolving global challenges and build new opportunities," he said.

The Prime Minister dedicated the award not only to Indians but also to all Ethiopians who have nurtured the bilateral relationship over generations. He conveyed the heartfelt gratitude of 1.4 billion Indians for this distinguished honour.

The conferment of the 'Great Honour Nishan' is widely seen as a major milestone that solidifies the close partnership between India and Ethiopia. It is also viewed as a positive step in advancing the shared agenda and aspirations of the Global South on the world stage.
